Question about 2006 Pontiac Torrent
Car will not start. Battery is good (just replaced in May). Starter, starter relay, ignition switch, and all fuses check to be okay. HELP! Could it be the Neutral Safety Switch and if so, where is it located??
Prior to the car not starting--I went over some railroad tracks below a hill and hit them a bit hard. All dashboard lights came on & went crazy for a moment. After I stopped the car--it wouldn't start again.
Please reply ASAP, as my job is TRAVELING, so I'm kind of in a pinch!
Check ground wires. The fact that you hit somthing, that could check things up. Would be nice if you mentioned what year is the car and model.

It will crank easier with plugs out because you've got no compression working against it. Take a good look at your cables to make sure they didn't heat up & burn off a few strands. Clean all connections good make sure they are 100%. You may have to have a draw test done on starter, just to see if maybe it's getting worn down. Only other thing that comes to mind is timing. If it's belt, & not too hard to pull cover & double check all marks are aligned, then I would do that.

When you turn the key, does the starter relay click? Could be the heavy connection from the battery to ground or to the starter solenoid. Make sure these connections as well as the battery terminal connections are clean and tight.

hi this could be a couple of things, have you checked the ignition relay this is the one in the fuse box, to check it, locate the fuse box, open it, and turn ignition if you hear a small click noise in the fuse box this will be the relay and is probably ok, but you can replace it just in case it is not working correctly, the neutral safety switch ( or parking switch ) is located under the center console, you will have to remove the console to get to it it should have a plunger type mechanism as you push the leaver into park it should push the plunger it just might be sticking or have dirt in it and need cleaning, just douse it in wd40 that should get it working again...hope this helps

Ok it seems you isolated and checked the usual suspects and some that I wouldn't have looked at except one. Did you check the neutral safety switch and Alignment on your gears for the gearshift lever. If it is not aligned properly it may not be hitting the neutral safety switch when in neutral and park. Also if the switch has failed. It may not be allowing your system to start when you move the key to the start position. I'm also wondering if this model has a fusable link in the starter cable but you say that you've isolated and tested both the starter and the relay. So I would really suspect that neutral safety switch. Hope this helps.
