Question about 2006 Pontiac Torrent

I have no heat, there is a door that closes the outside air and let in the hot air from the engine. that door broke.

I have a 2006 Pontiac Torrent as well and the heat is not working. It's just blowinbg cold air. Could this be a manufacturing problem?

You may have two problems here. If there's no fresh air coming in then perhaps the vent is closed and the actuator that opens it is stuck, but you should still get heat even if the air control is stuck in recirculate mode. Does the car overheat? Where is the temperature gauge after you've driven for 15 minutes or so? Does it move off "COLD" and stop somewhere in between HOT and COLD? If your car isn't leaking coolant, either inside the cabin or outside, and the temp gauge is more or less halfway between hot and cold, then it sounds like you have a blocked heater core or hose. Even if your fan doesn't work you should get some heat. You might take it to a garage and have them pressure test your cooling system.

is there an air bleed on top of the thermostat housing? If not, when it's cool, remove the radiator cap and start engine.
Let it run until water rises up to top edge of radiator cap lip.
A little air in the cooling system can cause this problem.

once the water rises to the top, put the cap on and shut engine off.

If you see a bleed screw on top of the waterneck/thermostat housing, just loosen it a little at a time while the engine is running and warm.

If you see air bubbles, let it keep going until its a smooth flow of water.

DO NOT REMOVE ALL THE WAY.

this is all assuming that your fan and water pump are working fine.

Keep spilled coolant away from pets. poison.

Rear vents blow out hot air when a/c is on


Keep this principle in mind: Heat, flows INTO cold... When you hold an ice cube in your hand, your hand gets cold because the heat from your hand is flowing INTO the clod ice cube, NOT because the cold is flowing into your hand.

On this particular vehicle (like many modern vehicles), hot water from the engine flows through the heater core at all times, even when you have the A/C on or when you have nothing (A/C, heat or vent) on. The system uses a door that closes down over the air opening to the heater core to keep you from feeling warm/hot air when it is not desired. The reason(s) you feel that the vent air is warm even when the outside temperature is somewhat cool is/could be caused by the following:

First, although as mentioned above, the heater core is restricted from receiving air when you are not commanding heat by the control panel, the heater core ultimately ends up as warm as the engine temperature. This is generally somewhere around 200 degrees F. Because all the air coming out of your vent(s) must pass over the door that restricts air over the heater core, and because the heater core gets so hot, some of that heat is picked up by air passing over the hot door even though it is closed.

Second, the door that restricts airflow from passing over the heater core has a seal around it. After a period of time this rubber (or usually felt) seal deteriorates, allowing some air to actually pass over the heater core. Since the core is hot all the time, some of the air gets heat loaded, producing warmed air.

Third, the door is operated by (in the case of your vehicle) an electric motor which responds gradually/proportionately to the setting you select on the temperature dial. If the motor gets out of calibration (can happen from time to time), if the control head has a 'glitch' and sends an incorrect signal (chronically, usually), or if the electric motor (called an actuator and contains its own little electronic 'brain') becomes faulty, the door may not be closing completely. This symptom can also be caused by a problem with the door itself, where the door gets stuck due to warping of the plastic case, a foreign object preventing it from closing (usually a pen or toy dropped into a vent or defrost opening), or a broken or cracked door hinge.

Last, the vent intake opening, where the 'fresh' air comes into the car on the 'vent' setting, is located just below the windshield on the passenger side. This opening receives its air directly off of the sun-baked, engine-heated hood and because of this the air is never as cool as outside air even on a cooler night.

I hope this answers your question. Many domestic vehicle manufacturers have begun installing heater control valves on their vehicles once again as they nearly all used to have. Note that the fix for most everything I have mentioned here requires removal of the dash of the vehicle or replacement of the control head and therefore is in many cases not worth the investment if it is not an extreme problem (for example, unless the system is stuck on full heat in the middle of summer. Additionally, remember that, if you so desire, manual shutoff valves can be placed in the heater hose lines (please consult a qualified mechanic as water from a vehicle can and will scald and burn you!), allowing you to manually shut off the flow of water into the heater core, thus reducing some of the heat (Readers note that certain foreign vehicles REQUIRE water flow through the heater core at all times for engine cooling and are not candidates for this procedure!).

what do you call the damper? There is no damper?

There is an inside/outside air door. A temperature blend door. ANd other doors to direct air to panel, floor, defrost.

U have a failed air temperature control electric blend door actuator, to replace this part requires the dash be removed from the car, the part is located on the outside of the heating duct about center of dash.

I would think the door you hear flapping is the door that controls the airflow across the heater coil - and the fan keeps blowing the door closed, preventing the airflow from going across the heating coil. I don't know whether this vehicle is vacum controlled or cable controlled - so either it's a disconnected cable, or a leaking vacum line.

the door opening & closing on Max a/c is the inside/outside air intake door.
The temp blend door is the one you are concernd about. It says you have to remove instrument panel for access. ouch!!!

A/C Electronic Door Actuator Motor
The A/C electronic door actuator motor (19E616) is located on top of the A/C evaporator core housing assembly.
  • Its function is to move the A/C air temperature control door on command from the control assembly.
  • The A/C electronic door actuator motor contains a reversible electric motor and a potentiometer. The potentiometer wiper is connected to the actuator output shaft and moves with the output shaft to indicate the position of the A/C air temperature control door.
  • Battery voltage is applied to the ends of the potentiometer. The voltage available at the wiper indicates the position of the potentiometer. The actuator wiper voltage is sent to the control module and matched with the wiper voltage of the module potentiometer. The printed circuit board then drives the actuator motor in the direction necessary to make the actuator wiper voltage agree with the control module wiper voltage.

Car just blows out cold air from heater


there is something wrong with your coolant system. Turn your car on, check your fan. If the fan runs nonstop, your relay switch to the fan needs to be changed. If its not the fan, its the thermostat. The thermostat is broke. If the thermostat is broke, it prevents your vehicle from warming up. The thermostat is a temperature Regulator for the engine. If your antifreeze is running nonstop in a circular motion, your engine will run cold. Your engine wont start that cold in the winter either.
