I have a problem i was installing the starter bracket on my 1992 ford ranger and the eng made anoise than the plate would move no farther the engine transmission wont turn at all help


Sounds like the transmission is not mated up correctly to the block. Take the starter back off and get the tranny up and tight, then do the starter again. What plate are you talking about? Is that like an inspection plate around the lower portion of the transmission?

Replace the flex plate. I can guarantee, that if you turn the flex plate enough you find a spot or two worn more than the rest of it. Missing teeth will cause a bendix grind, But if the teeth on the flex plate come to a point or even close point. This will kick the bendix back to the starter. The spring in the starter won't hold the pressure.

Jeep does not start but makes a fast clicking sound. What is it?


Clicking sound is the starter solenoid again and again pushing the starter motor armature forward against the toothed outer edge of the flywheel. Check the heavy cables and connections from the battery to the starter motor and the earth strap from the engine back to the frame. If everything is OK then remove the motor and examine the electrical striker plates inside the motor body...you will have to open the motor up on the bench. The striker plates are copper and when the solenoid pushes the armature the contacts hit the striker plates allowing heavy current to be drawn by the starter motor to crank the engine over. These striker plates wear out. Fortunately there are cheap kits that allow you to replace the striker plates. Once fixed the motor should last a good number of years. One pece of advice, clean the motor interior if you feel you have to but do not lubricate anything, it only attracts the dirt and this will kill the motor in short time.

Hi how do i get access to bolts to remove starter on a 97 voyager they seem to be behind the manifold & obscured by steering rack or am i not looking in right area? thanks mark hopkin


1. The Upper Bolt is easily accessed from the front of the vehicle going OVER the right side of the radiator. It is partially hidden by the exhaust manifold (front-to-back) and a black brace. There is a large gauge black ground wire going to where a nut(s) are located. This first nut will allow you to take off the ground connection, however the bolt has another nut further in (to the left) which is totally hidden. Remove the first nut.
2. After the first nut is off, remove the ground wire, then using a deep socket 15mm socket remove the second nut which is welded/attached to the bolt.
3. Go under the vehicle to remove the wires from the Starter. The first wire is the positive cable (should be red) attached on the solenoid portion of the starter. Remove the nut and lock washer and detach the wire. The second wire (single small gauge) goes to the solenoid and is connected using a slide lock - press release connection. It is difficult to see the slide lock and the press release located on the top side of the connection. Slide the red slide lock out and press the release, and pull out the connection straight out. Do not force it, or it may damage the connector. Note the placement of the bottom bolt position on the Starter. DO NOT remove the two (2) small, but long connector bolts on the wire connection end of the starter.
4. Remembering the noted postion: remove the lower 15mm bolt from the Starter. The bolt head is located on the back side of a plate moving towards the left side of the Van. It is easily accessed from underneath in front of the transmission. Near the end of removing this bolt, support the starter or it will fall out.
5. Remove the Starter, noting the position of the starter. There should be a separate starter facing plate. If if didn't come down with the starter check up in the starter to flywheel opening and remove the plate.
6. Installation is Reverse of above. The facing plate is a little tricky getting it to stay in place. By starting with the bottom bolt it is easier, Make sure you continuously support the Starter in position to save crossthreading the bolt or starter. Hand tighten only the bottom bolt as you want to be able to turn the starter slightly to get the top bolt in.
Starter Bolts are tigthen to 35 ft-lbs.

How to change a starter in a 2007 town and


1. Disconnect the negative side of battery. 10mm ratchet.
2. Jack the front of the vehicle.
3. Use jack stands to support the vehicle. Do not use only the jack. I use the jack as a back up for the stands.
4. Chock/Block the rear wheels.
5. The Starter is located on the front side of the engine, just below the exhaust manifold near the transmission-flywheel housing.
6. Looking at the engine compartment from the left fender side of the van, there are two bolts (15mm) that need to be removed. One located at 10-11 o'clock position on the Starter and one at 4-5 o'clock position on the Starter.
7. The Upper Bolt is easily accessed from the front of the vehicle going OVER the radiator. It is partially hidden by a black brace. There is a black ground wire going to where a nut is located. This first nut will allow you to take off the ground connection, however the bolt has another nut further in (to the left) which is totally hidden. Remove this first nut.
8. After the first nut is off then using a deep socket 15mm socket remove the second nut which is attached to the bolt.
9. Go under the vehicle to remove the wires from the Starter. The first wire is the positive cable (should be red) attached on the solenoid portion of the starter. That is a 13mm nut, Remove the nut and lock washer and detatch the wire. The second wire (single small gauge) goes to the solenoid and is connected using a slide lock - press release connection. Do not force it, or it may damage the connector. Note the placement of the bottom bolt position on the Starter. DO NOT remove the tow (2) small, but long connector bolts on the wire connection end of the starter.
10. Remembering the noted postion: remove the lower 15mm bolt from the Starter. The bolt head is located on the back side of plate moving towards the left side of the Van. It is easily accessed from underneath in front of the transmission. Near the end of removing this bolt, support the starter or it will fall out.

Starter replacment


If you are a larger person, you will need to get the front end into the air so you can move under it. Make certain to block the wheels! I had to take off a bar that ran under my starter before I could completely remove the starter. When I took the starter off, a plate fell to the ground. I didn't know what it went to, so I didn't put it back in. I wound up having to take the starter loose again to replace the plate, turned out it was a shim and was needed to help the starter last as long as possible. Also, the first rebuilt starter I bought was faulty. All in all I had to take the starter loose three times before I was done. Works fantastic now!

1999 Chevy Blazer Starter


the starter is located on the passenger side lower motor. it has two bolts in it that hold it in place. it actually goes through a hole/slot in the transmission to the flex plate.

1st. disconnect the negative cable on the battery.
2nd. raise the vehicle safely and place a jack stand under the vehicle out of your way but near where you will be working(for safety).
3rd. remove the two bolts that hold the starter in place.
4th. remove the wires from the back of the starter.
5th. install in reverse order of above.

note: there may be little plates between the starter and the mounting points called shims. if there are then make sure you put them back.

Repeated Broken Flex Plate in Transmission


1997 Honda Passport 4wd
Make sure you have the correct factory Honda starter in your car , if its an aftermarket starter they may have replaced with cheapo starter,sometime the teeth that engauge starter to your flexplate will not mesh properly,because there different,causing the flex plate to fail. I had the same problem. I went thru 2 before I found this out..Hope this helps.
