some cars may have interlock with the brake switch to the shift lever inter-lock. have someone step on the brake, if brake light won't come on, suspect the brake switch is preventing the shift.

Engine doesn't seem to be putting out the same power it used to. when i push on the accelerator, the engine revs up but lacks the acceleration speed it normally has. i'm familiar with transmissions...

Even though the transmission is shifting like it normally does, the torque converter may not be locking like it should be. That would give the feeling of the engine being normal but the acceleration not being 'solid'. If the engine seems to be running normally, the problem is likely the torque converter.

Where is the oil stick at under the hood for a 2002 mazda protege?

that will be in the front or the back of the engine it might not be black so it will be hard to find if u pull a stick that has red fluid on it that is the transmission there are only to sticks that u can pull out of and engine if it a stick shift then it will not have a transmission dip stick which means there is only one stick.
