Question about 1990 Mazda 626

Was loping in drive, would have to put in neutral, now stalling in neutral, at first i thoght it was the fuel injector, not sure

Engine runs smooth if giving more than idle pressure. It is when the motor is engaged with transmission at start the engine lopes and wants to cut off. If I press the throttle hard it takes right off. If I come to a stop I can put transmission in neutral to keep it from cutting off. This creates a shifting that is not normal and I'm afraid it is a sign of failure coming.

my first thought is the intake is dirty. a can of seafoam in your gas tank will clean that. also check the ground wire on the fuel injector rail.you can find it on the back of the engine close to the fire wall. take it loose and clean it and reinstall. last thought is the throttle po,sensor.

This I think would be either of two things, it could be your fuel filter or your fuel pump, hope this helps

The power through the fuse is to the fuel pump, this only runs long enough to pressure the fuel behind the injectors so that when they open the fuel is an high pressure. So you will normally hear it when you put the key in and turn it, before you start the engine, and then while driving it will be on. Your fuel pump is running longer than usual, because the fuel is not getting up to sufficient pressure. This would also account for the poor running. If you do not have fuel leaking all over the floor, the first thing to replace is the fuel filter. These get dirty over time, especially if you ran the tank dry in recent months. If its blocked the fuel pump tries hard to suck fuel from the tank through it and fails.

Idles odd and seems like it wants to stall, but then when I put it in neutral its just fine. I've put in new plugs and wires and a new battery. I also ran some 'Gom-out fuel injector cleaner' through it...


4 main causes for rough idling as you describe:
  1. Bad MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor (causes erratic idling)
  2. Bad EGR (Exhaust Gar Recirculation) valve
  3. Bad TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) often will stall when engine is warm and in drive but not moving ie at a Stop sign.
  4. Clogged fuel injector
Best cause of action would be to go to one of the major Auto Parts chain stores that provide free diagnostic tests. The results would lead you to which part(s) is(are) defective.

My engine keeps shaking. The RPMs go up and down. Sometimes it even stalls.

Stalls after long drives, will start right back up again but when put into gear stalls again, if start in neutral and rev for abit then will go into gear and drive ok for a while. Smells of gas when...


You may be suffering from leaky injectors as far as the smell at startup. I would check for codes in memory on this car if it has a computer that will do that. Also I would consider the throttle position sensor. Im sure that somwhere you will find a bad sensor or worn injector.
