Remove negative lead first. You can buy a little gizmo called a setting saver that plugs into the lighter that will keep the radio from going blank. Other than that, just be careful and do not accidentally hook it up backwards and you should be fine.

First you have to take it apart. They usually fail at the end under the engine. Find replacement parts, then re-assemble.

Changing the car battery for a 2004 SSR

- Put the truck where there is plenty of light, OR bring a shop light under there

- Put the truck on a surface you don't mind lying on (i.e. NOT gravel or mud). Bring a piece of carpet if you don't want to get your clothes dirty

- Bring your wrenches BEFORE you crawl under the truck

- Crawl under the truck, to the REAR of the battery (don't be wimpy about crawling under there if you have no lift. There is plenty of room)

- Unfasten the NEGATIVE terminal, and wedge it where it will NOT contact anything metallic on the truck (or better, TAPE it WELL). THIS IS A SAFETY and ANTI-DAMAGE PRECAUTION SO TAKE IT SERIOUSLY

- Unfasten the POSITIVE terminal, and wedge it where it will not contact anything metallic (or tape it)

- Undo whatever else might be holding the battery in the box (I cannot remember, and I like I said above, I am currently between SSRs)

- Here is the neat part: The battery tray swings down a few inches to enable easy removal and reinstallation of the battery! Swing it down!

- Remove battery

- Reverse above steps EXACTLY to reinstall. ESPECIALLY the order of the terminals.

Some additional "useful data":

Do not drop the battery . . . smile.gif

Do not try to open the doors with the battery disconnected. They cannot "index" the windows down without the battery, so you will tear the window glass past the window seals - not good.

Do NOT leave the key in the ignition before removing the battery - that will LOCK the key there until the battery is back in!

EXPECT some re-learning by the computer after the battery removal / reinstallation, about things like (a) clock time and (b) the ideal air/fuel ratios for your typical driving, as it loses all this kind of stuff when the battery is removed.

Replacing knock sensor on 2001 GMC 5.3L engine

Just remove the old one, install the new one. Be careful not to damage the electrical connector when you disconnect it.

I'd disconnect the negative battery cable first.

Manufacturing the "SSR"

Chevrolet has stopped production of the SSR. The last model year was 2006, which was the best year (got a large HP increase). The production was ended due to what appears to be poor sales. If you still want one though, definitely get a 2006 model.
