Check the condition of the motor mounts. Open the hood and take a look while some one else is change from drive to reverse.

You can usually tell by grabbing the driveshaft & turning it by hand back & forth & push up & down, side to side looking for play in the joint.

Your problem is very common.
you need to have your u-joints also known as universal joints. that is what the clunking noise you are hearing.

Sounds like you got a transmission problem. I'd start with checking and changing transmission fluid. When changing be sure to see what the level was first and if it was low. If it's still clunking I'd then take it to a good service shop.

cannot be sure here without a on site inspection but i would hazard a guess and say the flex drive plate has broke around the crankshaft retaining bolts ,its a gearbox out job to repair ,the plate holds the torque converter in position to the engine crank ,Dont get this problem with a manual transmission
