2002 X-Type Jaguar 2.5, I am getting a code that reads "Gear Box Default". I can only drive the car in 2nd gear, what can i do to get all the gears back and so I can drive it normal. Is there a switch on the transmission or a sensor that is gone out? Mabye a fuse? If so how can I locate that problem, where is the switch/sensor/fuse if that is what the problem is. How much damage am I doing to the car driving it in 2nd doing about 30 miles? Driving the car in 2nd gear does that mean the transmission is completely out? It will not pull in drive. Please contact me by phone or email. Phone:502.821-9437 or email stephaniedsmith67@msn.com May contact anytime. Thank you Danny Smith

It can be transmission shift solenoids located inside the gear box had blown, or a fault transmission control module.
To find out the fault go to the nearest garage and ask them to pull out the error codes.
If the problem is transmission shift solenoids, then it is repaired opening gear box, testing solenoids and replacing them. If you get a specific error code you do not need to test. If problem is TCM (control module) just replace it.
Error codes related to transmission will start with P07.
Here a list of transmission related codes. You will need to connect ECM (car computer) to an OBDII tester to get codes:

If you have a tranny code it is possibly a shift solenoid code. You can purchase a new shift solenoid from a tranny shop and have them install it. You can also purchase one from the dealer and install it yourself if you are a very capable mechanic. If this is the front wheel drive vehicle it is advised to take to shop because it is a whole lot of work and headache to change.

If it is the shift solenoid it is internal. Yes if you keep driving it in second gear at that speed you could possibly cause severe damage to the tranny and motor by keeping it reved up higher than normal.

I have a 94 Jaguar xj6. the transmission light is on. it shifts hard in maybe 1st and 2nd gear. I've changed the transmission ecu, transmission relay, and fuses that have to do with the gearbox.

Change the xmission fluid and filter. If that doesnt fix it, it could be the solenids, the soleniod pack, what evey they call it on a Jag.

My tata magic doesnot shift to 2nd gear in fact

Could be gearbox failure, a sticky gear linkage, or a shot clutch

get under the car and look to see if the linkages are straight and not bent or jammed.

Most likely be that or the clutch

Jaguar X SE 2.5 gearbox problem

hey johnhoile,

Sorry to break the bad new to you, put you most likely need a transmission depending on what codes are stored in the system. I have dont numerous automatic transmission on x-types all they all started with a gear box fault light on.

If the codes have something to do with a incorrect gear ration that is a guarantee red flag for a new transmission

Gearbox sometimes take a while to go into drive

if it is hard to shift when the vehicle is cold chances are that the oil in the gear box is too thick take it to a shop and try using a thinner oil than what is in the gear box and this will eradicae your problem
