Question about 2002 Lincoln LS
There is a spring damaged in the valve body, these are known for causing loss of 4th and 5th gear and an E where the shift indicator is read on the dash. The spring is the 3-4 prestroke spring, and an updated one is made by Sonnax and available through Fatsco in NJ, look them up on the web.
It is a 6 dollar part but does require some serious time to reinstall, and is not really a DIY job unless you have a lot of patience (the entire bottom control section/valve body needs to be removed from the car and serviced on a bench) and an inch-lb torque wrench. email@example.com

Stop driving it,until you change the Tran Solenoid Pack, inside the oil pan.
If you go to a shop,it will be more, plus labor.
If you go to a dealer, you can make a mortgage payment, just to fix your car
