Question about 1996 Nissan Altima

1 Answer

My 96 altima has a rough idle problem.

But when I give it gas, seems to be ok. I took it for a drive and around 55 or 60 it started to buck or hesitate on me...I checked air filter, gas filter, cleaned maf and throttle body, and took apart distributor. Spark plugs and wires are 9 months old. Someone told me to clean or replace PCV Valve, but getting conflicting info on its location. Theres nothing on the valve cover other than a hose with a wire brush in it to mass air intake. And the other location was on pass side of engine below intake mani. but I cant locate anything close to what i was told as a description to look for. I guess the question is whats next or what in your opinion could be the problem?

Sounds like you could have a vacuum leak in the intake manifold due to a faulty gasket, spray the gasket down with parts cleaner, csee if the idle smoothes out if it does you have a bad manifold gasket.

2001 Nissan Altima shuts off in hot weather

it is the cam position sensor...the telltale sign of the failure is that it happens when the vehicle is warm and has been driven for a while. Sensor is about 40 bucks at the auto parts store, make sure the replacement sensor is metal, not plastic.
The main symptoms of this sensor failing are rough starts, rough idling and not starting at all especially when warm.

Hi, I have a 2006 Altima with 31,500 miles. Recently, the engine start shaking when car is Idle but I still feel the shake when driving or at red lights. My second problem is a weird loud (humming) noise...

You don't need to change the spark plugs since it has only 31.5 K. The plugs should last 60K. There is a an adjustment at the gas cable end at engine to increase the idle a little bit. You can increase rpm at idle to 600 RPM. Since your RPM at idle is low that why it is shaking at idle, red lights. Let me know it it is shaking at high speed ( 2500 RPM)

Rough idle, dies when trying to give it gas

it'll either be your ignition system (spark plugs, distributor cap, etc) or more likely your fuel system (most likely your fuel pump or your fuel filter)

Car acts like its loosing power when i give it gas to drive

Call ahead and then go to a local autoparts chain. Verify that they can read your OBD1 code. Most can only read 96 and newer OBDII. It may be worth paying the diagnstic fee at a Nissan dealer to find out what your code is. The codes are system specific and take the guesswork out of emissions system diagnosis. Consider this: When was the last time you had a tune up? Worn and out of spec gaps on your spark plugs can diminish performance, yet the car will idle fine without a load on the engine.

I had the same problem with my 96 Chevy 4.3. It idled rough enough to shake the truck at a stop. It revved up fine but sputtered on take off. My truck did not want to stay in overdrive because of the low rev. I changed cap, rotor, plugs, wires and this did nothing. Finally I took the intake off and found corrosion on the side intake gaskets near the rear of the engine causing a vacuum leak.

I have experienced this problem on similar vehicles. You should try and replace the coolant temp sensor. If it is not reading the correct temp to the ecm, it will not get the right fuel map. Also, the cts will not always throw a code.
