Electric Fuel Pump - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION


CAUTION The 220 TBI unit has a bleed in the pressure regulator to relieve pressure any time the engine is turned off, however a small amount of fuel may be released when the fuel line is disconnected. As a precaution, cover the fuel line with a cloth and dispose of properly.

  1. With the engine turned OFF , relieve the fuel pressure at the pressure regulator. Refer to the fuel relief procedure in this section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Raise and support the rear of the vehicle on jackstands.
  4. Drain the fuel tank, then remove it.
  5. Using a hammer and a drift punch, drive the fuel lever sending device and pump assembly locking ring (located on top of the fuel tank) counterclockwise. Lift the assembly from the tank and remove the pump from the fuel lever sending device.
  6. Pull the pump up into the attaching hose while pulling it outward away from the bottom support. Be careful not to damage the rubber insulator and strainer during removal. After the pump assembly is clear of the bottom support, pull it out of the rubber connector.
To install:
  1. Connect the fuel pump to the hose.
Be careful that you don't fold or twist the strainer when installing the sending unit, or you'll restrict fuel flow.
  1. Install a new O-ring on the pump assembly and then position them into the fuel tank.
  2. Turn the locking ring clockwise until its tight.
  3. Install the fuel tank and connect the battery cable.
TESTING

Special tools J-29658-82 and J-29658, or their equivalents, will be necessary for this procedure.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Secure two sections of 3 / 8 in. x 10 in. (9.5mm x 254mm) steel tubing, with a double-flare on one end of each section.
  3. Install a flare nut on each section of tubing, then connect each of the sections into the flare nut-to-flare nut adapter, while care included in the gauge adapter tool No. J-29658-82 or equivalent.
  4. Attach the pipe and the adapter assembly to the gauge tool No. J-29658 or equivalent.
  5. Raise and support the vehicle on jackstands.
  6. Remove the air cleaner and plug the THERMAC vacuum port on the TBI.
  7. Disconnect the fuel feed hose between the fuel tank and the filter, then secure the other ends of the 3 / 8 in. (9.5mm) tubing into the fuel hoses with hose clamps.
  8. Reconnect the battery cable.
  9. Start the engine, check for leaks and observe the fuel pressure, it should be 9-13 psi (62-89 kPa).
  10. Depressurize the fuel system, remove the testing tool, remove the plug from the THERMAC vacuum port, reconnect the fuel line, start the engine and check for fuel leaks.

My dad has a 1988 bronco II and took to walmart and had battery put in backwards. He replaced the computer on the truck and still won't engage fuel pumps to start engine


Did you test the fuel pump for power to the fuel pump? If the pump is receiving the correct voltage, then the problem most likely is that the knuckleheads at Walmart fried your fuel pump also.

I check all relay and don't receive direct electricity to the fuel pump and no start the car


You will never have direct electricity to fuel pump only when running then once you shut off ignition that shuts engine off fuel pump to automatically shuts off.I would change the fuel pump sit in car turn key Th start position do not crank engine if you do not hear a grrr,,,grunt sound i would say fuel pump not functioning therefore fuel pump malfunction replace.

do not go cheap remember what your dad said you get wat you pay for, spend the little extra to get a name brand go to NAPA or CARQUEST and buy the premium.

There no repair for fuel pump, just gets replace, fuel pump is in fuel tank, the fuel tank will have to be remove to replace fuel pump.

How to remove fuel tank


Run the fuel tank empty, if possible. The Jimmy's tank does not have a drain plug, but if the pump is still operating, then it is the only method of running the tank dry. An empty tank is lighter than a full one, and it makes removal easier.

Unbolt the fuel tank's protective shield by turning its hex-head bolts in a counterclockwise direction. The shield will then slide out. With it removed, the tank's bolts are now accessible

Disconnect the electrical and fuel line connections to the tank's fuel pump, located on the top center front of the tank. There are two (or three) different-sized fuel lines, and one wiring adapter plug that must be disconnected. The hoses come off by pinching or unscrewing their hose clamps, and the plug simply pulls free once its catch is depressed.

Unbolt the fuel tank by turning the bolts that hold it to the frame counterclockwise. The tank should be supported with a jack during this process, as once the tank is freed it will drop from the frame. Lower the tank out of the truck and use the jacks to set it aside to work on it.

If you going to replace the fuel pump:

Unscrew the two screws holding the fuel pump to the tank by turning them in a counterclockwise direction. Once they are out, the pump can be gently pulled upwards and out of the tank. Some residual fuel may spill out, so have a towel handy.

Replace the fuel pump by lowering it into place inside the tank, then securing its screws in a clockwise direction. The plastic fuel pump may be easily damaged by turning the screws too far, so only tighten them enough to seal the pump to the tank.

Replace the fuel tank into the truck with the jack(s), and tighten the bolts that secure it to the frame in a clockwise direction.

Reconnect the fuel lines and adapter plug. The fuel lines are sized for their nipple fittings, and should only fit onto the nipple that they were designed for. Tighten each one with a hose clamp. The wiring adapter plug should make a "snap" sound when it is properly seated.

Fill the tank with fuel and test the new pump. The pump should make an audible whine as the truck is started, and the whine should stop after a couple of seconds. The pump might make a softer sound after the truck is started--this is normal.

After two tanks of fuel has gone through, replace the fuel filter.

Good luck and hope this helps, Note the bolt that holds the gas tank strap may strip or snap. Just cut it off and replace by welding a new bolt for the gas tank strap.

Both fuel pump relays run hot. I have replaced both of them. The truck started and ran for about 30 minutes then quit. I replaced the relays and it ran for a few minutes and quit again.


You could have a bad fuel pump relay switch. The fuel pumpmag-glass_10x10.gif relay switch gets the fuel pump running in the vehicle during the start cycle. The terms fuel pump relay and fuel pump relay switch are used interchangeably. The fuel pump relay begins its job when the automobile operator turns to the ignition on, but before the motor is actually running. At that point, the fuel pump relay in some cars sends a signal to the ignition switch, which in turn sends a signal to the fuel pump to turn on. Others fuel pump relays have actual circuitry inside of them that receive the ignition signal and directly signal the fuel pump to engage.

Chevy Blazer won't start; fuel pump needs replacing


Before spending several hundres on a fuel pump, I recommend doing a fuel pressure test. You can get a test gauge pretty cheap at a parts store. If the pump is junk, you raise the truck, lower the fuel tank, unplug the electronics from the pump at the top of the tank, then with a hammer and flat head scrwedrive, gently tap the lock ring in a counter clockwise direction until it pops off. Pull the pump assembly out and install the new one. Reverse directions to install.
