Question about 2003 Chevrolet Malibu
Dwilt79 nailed it! Happens to me all the time. A quick jiggle until I hear that latch button pop out is all it takes. Have to explain to the rest of the family too, I'm not the only driver.

Make sure the car is all the way in park. The least little offset of the shifter will cause the key not to fully go in off position. This happened to me when my automatic start kicked on an my car was smoking due to a hole in my coolant tank. How a hole got in the coolant tank is beyond me but it's a situation I haven't seen listed. Hope this is helpful.
