If possible get a test light. Clip one end to a ground and the other end to the light socket. Have someone turn on the lights. If you get the test light to come one then replace the bulb with a new one anyway. Your getting power to the housing. If not, then do the same test at the fuse block and make sure that your getting power there. If your not getting power there then check the main fuse. This will help diagnose the problem. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Right rear taillights are now working, turn signal and brake lights do work.

You will want to check your fuses first. There should be a fuse panel under the hood. Check the "Park Lamps" fuse to see if it's blown. If the fuse isn't blown, you may want to check the bulbs themselves to ensure that they aren't blown. (These are dual filament bulbs).
I'm assuming that the front park lights are working?

Rear tail and brake lights out 97 Jetta

I believe this car has a bulb with two fillaments for side and brake lights, it is unlikely that they are both burnt out at the same time but possible. It is more likely that the bulb holder or a ground connection is rusted or loose. The fuse generally covers all rear lights.

Check the fuses in the fuse panel area. Check to see that the bulbs are good. Good Luck, Jim

2001 VW Jetta rear running lights out. bulbs good, fuses good.

Almost sure it is a recall for a relay. Call the dealer, I had a 2001 VR6 with the same problem, and it was a simple, free recall.

Check and make sure the brake lights work, if the system doesn't get a signal that the brake pedal is pressed it won't come out of part, it is the park interlock safety feature, the problem won't be bulbs, it will be a brake light switch problem, if the brake light do work, the next place to look is the park release solenoid, it will be on the steering column most likely down low under the dash.
