You can't clear the "codes" by disconnecting the battery. It comes on because it has found an error, get it checked with a scanner.

Hi Danny, I would have both the vehicle and the remote fob batteries checked and if required, replaced. Cold weather can and does show up problems with batteries. It would also be a good idea to have a diagnostic scan carried out on your vehicle, just to be on the safe side. Regards John

Engine light on

check to see that the fuel cap is on correctly ... there is a sensor that checks to see if gas vapors are leaking into the atmosphre and causing ozone depletion and alerts you to this. if it is on correctly and tight the light will go out after you drive several miles if you want a quick check on this light ... disconect the neg battery cable for 10 min and reconnect if the light is out and stays out the problem is solved if it comes back on then look to something else as the cause. As long as the light is not flashing you are ok.

Engine light on

A code P0420 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
  • Leaded fuel was used where unleaded was called for
  • An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
  • The engine coolant temperature sensor is not working properly
  • Damaged or leaking exhaust manifold / catalytic converter / exhaust pipe
  • Retarded spark timing
  • The oxygen sensors in front and behind the converter are reporting too similar of readings
  • That should get you going.
