I can't get the rotors off due to the parking brake cable or clip. How do I remove that?

    Yeah, once I pulled off the bracket that held the caliper in place, the rotor popped right off. I don't know why I was fixated on the parking brake assembly. I did figure out how the parking brake worked and it's pretty simple and I think effective.



    Putting the new rotors on was like working on drum brakes where you have to make sure the brake shoes are aligned correctly, but they too went on pretty easily.



    The brakes are done and it's time to get on to another project.

The grand prixs that have rear disc breaks actually have a mini drum break built into the inner rotor which is the parking break...i know this from experience since my grand prix had the same problem i couldnt get the rear rotor off and found out that some how the inner drum parking break had become seized and wouldnt allow the rotor to come off...bout all you can do it try to adjust the parking break tension which should be located by the gas tank and hope that it frees it up enought so that you can take off the rotor other wise a can of pb blaster and a rubber mallet to force the rotor off...which will probably mean your going to have to guy new shoes for the inner break along with a new rotor...heres a couple sites i found useful...

Hello! There isn't anything that would keep the rotor from coming off of the hub assembly other than the caliper assembly. Are you meaning to say that you're having a problem removing the caliper bracket and caliper?

How do I get the rear spindle off so I can replace the emergency brake shoes on my 2006 chrysler pacifica?



Adjustment

  1. Place parking brake lever in -full released- position.
  2. Raise and support vehicle.
  3. Remove plug in parking brake shoe support to access adjuster star-wheel.
  4. Through the access hole, rotate the adjuster star wheel in the following direction to expand the shoes outward against the drum:
    1. Left brake - Rotate star-wheel toward rear of vehicle.
    2. Right brake - Rotate star-wheel toward front of vehicle.
  5. Using an appropriate tool, turn adjuster star wheel until wheel will not rotate (dead lock).
  6. Back off adjuster six detents (teeth).
  7. Rotate wheel, checking for light drag. If drag is too heavy, continue to back off adjuster one detent at a time until light drag is present. Do not back off star-wheel more than 17 detents from wheel lock.
  8. Install access plug.
  9. Adjust opposite wheel parking brake shoes using same method.
  10. Lower vehicle.
  11. Apply and release parking brake lever once to ensure proper operation of parking brakes.


Removal & Installation NOTE The following procedure may be used to remove shoes on either side of the vehicle.

  1. Lock out automatic adjuster in parking brake lever.
  2. Raise and support vehicle.
  3. Access and remove rear hub and bearing.
  4. Remove parking brake cable bolt at knuckle.
  5. Completely back off parking brake shoe adjustment.
  6. Remove parking brake shoe adjuster spring.
  7. Remove shoe adjuster.
  8. Remove upper brake shoe hold-down clip and pin.
  9. Remove lower brake shoe hold-down clip and pin.
  10. Remove upper and lower shoes with return spring from shoe actuator.
  11. Remove return spring from shoes.

To install:
  1. Install return spring between upper and lower shoes.
    NOTE Before installing shoes on actuator, make sure actuator hooked to rear cable is positioned with word -UP- facing outward.
  2. Install upper and lower shoes with return spring on shoe actuator located on parking brake cable.
  3. Install lower brake shoe hold-down pin through rear of support and lower shoe, then install hold-down clip.
  4. Install upper brake shoe hold-down pin through rear of support and upper shoe, then install hold-down clip.
  5. Install shoe adjuster. Place end of adjuster with star wheel upward.
  6. Install parking brake shoe adjuster spring.
  7. Install bolt securing parking brake cable to knuckle and tighten bolt to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  8. Using Brake Shoe Gauge, Special Tool C-3919, or equivalent, measure inside diameter of parking brake drum portion of rotor.
  9. Place Gauge over parking brake shoes at widest point.
  10. Using adjuster star wheel, adjust parking brake shoes until linings on both park brake shoes just touch jaws on gauge. This will give a good preliminary adjustment of parking brake shoes, before a final adjustment is made at end of this procedure.
  11. Install hub and bearing with wheel speed sensor as well as all components necessary to access it.
  12. Lower vehicle.
  13. Unlock automatic adjuster in parking brake lever.
  14. Perform final adjustment of parking brake shoes

  15. Adjustment This vehicle is equipped with permanently sealed rear wheel bearings. There is no periodic lubrication or maintenance recommended for these units.


    Removal & Installation

    1. Raise and support vehicle.
    2. Remove wheel mounting nuts, then tire and wheel assembly.
    3. If equipped with AWD:
      1. Remove cotter pin, nut lock and spring washer from half shaft.
      2. While a helper applies brakes to keep hub from turning, remove hub nut and washer.
    4. Remove brake caliper and rotor from hub and bearing assembly.

    5. Disconnect vehicle wiring harness connector at wheel speed sensor connector.
    6. Unclip wheel speed sensor connector from spare tire mounting support.
    7. Disconnect two sensor cable routing clips on rear suspension crossmember.
    8. Disconnect two sensor cable routing clips along toe link.
    9. Disconnect sensor cable from bracket on brake support.

    10. Completely loosen, but do not remove four bolts fastening hub and bearing in place. Once loosened from threads in hub and bearing, push bolts up against rear of hub and bearing to keep brake support plate in place when hub and bearing is removed.

    11. Pull hub and bearing off knuckle and half shaft (if equipped with AWD), then thread wheel speed sensor cable through hole in brake support plate as it is removed with hub and bearing.

    To install:
    1. Position hub and bearing bolts though rear of knuckle and parking brake support just enough to hold support in place as hub and bearing is installed.
    2. Install hub and bearing by first feeding end of wheel speed sensor cable through hole in bottom of parking brake support. As this is being done, if equipped with AWD, slide hub and bearing onto half shaft. Place hub and bearing through brake support, onto knuckle, lining up mounting bolt holes with bolts and placing wheel speed sensor head at bottom.
    3. Install four bolts fastening hub and bearing in place. Tighten mounting bolts to 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm).
    4. Place wheel speed sensor cable routing grommet into bracket on parking brake support.
    5. Route wheel speed sensor cable along toe link and rear suspension crossmember connecting routing clips where shown.
    1. Connect vehicle wiring harness to wheel speed sensor connector.
    2. Install brake rotor and caliper.
    3. If equipped with AWD:
      1. Install washer and hub nut on end of half shaft.
      2. While a helper applies brakes to keep hub from turning, tighten hub nut to 180 ft. lbs. (244 Nm).
      3. Install spring washer, nut lock and cotter pin on end of half shaft.
    4. Install tire and wheel assembly. Install and tighten wheel mounting nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).

How can i change the brake pads on the rear tires??


Hi. Please see procedure below:

Remove the old Brake Pads

1 Park your car on a level surface. If you have a stick shift car make sure the car is in gear. Place blocks in front of the front tires so the car does not move while you are working on it.

2 Open the hood of your car and locate the master cylinder. If necessary, remove brake fluid until the level in the container is less than half full. A turkey baster is a good tool for this. Put the brake fluid in the plastic container and dispose of it the way you dispose of motor oil.

3 Raise the rear end of your car with your car jack. Remove the rear tire or wheel assembly.

4 Remove the parking brake cable from the back of the caliper. Use the pliers to remove the cable clip (restraining clip). This step is done only for Grand Prix RPO Z7Us.

5 Hand-tighten two lug nuts to the studs to hold the disc rotor in place while you work on the caliper. Remove the bolt and washer holding the cable support bracket to the caliper. The cable support has the parking brake cable and brake hose attached to it. This step is not done for Grand Prix RPO Z7Us.

6 Use the socket wrench to remove the caliper guide pin bolts. Slide the caliper off of the disc rotor and hang it in the wheel well with a small bungee cord or wire hanger; Don't let the caliper hang from the brake hose.

7 Remove the brake pads and shims from the caliper. Throw away the shims.

Install the new Brake Pads

1 Use the spanner tool to rotate the piston clockwise all the way into the caliper. Make sure the notches on the piston are at the 6 and 12 o'clock positions. There is a boot (rubber seal) around the piston bore. Lift the seal's inner edge and press out any trapped air. Insert the brake pad clips into the caliper support.

2 Apply a thin coat of lubricant to the parts of the inner pad that come in contact with the caliper piston and mounting areas. As you install the brake pads in the caliper support, make sure the wear sensors are downward and at the leading edge of the rotor when the tire rotates. Push the brake pads into the support, holding the metal shoe edge against the spring end of the pad clips. This slightly bends the spring ends and lets the notches engage with the support. This step does not apply for the Grand Prix RPO Z7U.

3 Swing the caliper back into place over the brake pads and replace the mounting bolt. Reconnect the cable support bracket and tighten the bolt to 32-ft.lb. (43 Nm). Remove the lug nuts holding the rotor in place. For the Grand Prix RPO Z7U, Slide the caliper back into place on the disc rotor. Reconnect the parking brake cable. Insert and tighten the caliper mounting bolts to 44 foot lb. (60 Nm).

4 Replace the tire wheel assembly. Lower the car to the ground.

5 Pump the brake pedal a few times to seat the brake pads. Do this before trying to move your car.

6 Add fluid to the master cylinder container to replace any you removed before you removed the old brake pads.

7 Season the brake pads by making only gentle stops when you are driving for the first week

Removal & Installation
  1. For the 1500HD, relieve the tension from the park brake cable by pulling down on the park brake cable in front of the equalizer then removing the cable from the equalizer bar.
  2. For the 25/35 series Disable the park brake cable automatic adjuster.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4. Remove the tire and the wheel.
  5. Perform the following procedure to remove the cable (2) from the backing plate (4):
    • Compress the spring (3) by pushing toward the lever (1).
    • Depress the locking tabs.
    • Pull the cable housing out of the backing plate (4).
    • Remove the cable (2) through the slot in the backing plate.

  6. Remove the park brake cable (2) from the lever (1).
  7. Remove the rotor.
  8. Remove the rear axle shaft.
  9. Remove the park brake shoe return spring (6).

  10. Remove the park brake shoe anchor springs and pins.
  11. Separate the tips of the shoes from the park brake actuator and remove the park brake shoes and adjuster assembly from the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Clean the debris and the dust from the park brake components using a clean shop cloth.
  2. Install the adjuster assembly to the park brake shoes.
  3. Separate the tips of the shoes and install the park brake shoes to the park brake actuator.
  4. Install the park brake shoe anchor springs and pins.
  5. Install the park brake shoe return spring (6).
  6. Adjust the park brake shoe.
  7. Install the rear axle shaft.
  8. Install the rotor.
  9. Install the park brake cable (2) to the lever (1).
  10. Perform the following procedure to install the cable (2) to the backing plate (4):
    • Compress the spring (3) by pushing towards the lever (1).
    • Route the cable (2) through the slot in the backing plate.
    • Push the cable housing into the backing plate (4) until the locking tabs snap into place.
  11. Install the tire and wheel.
  12. Remove the safety stands.
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14. Enable the park brake cable automatic adjuster.
  15. For the 1500HD, install the park brake cable to the equalizer by pulling down on the park brake cable in front of the equalizer then installing the cable to the equalizer bar.
  16. Adjust the park brake cable.

I was told that my parking brake on my 2002 Kia Sedona is not engaging properly, though there is good tension on the line. I've replaced the rear drum brake pads, and adjusted the parking brake cable that...


Cable may be seizing in the sheath due to corrosion. Remove the drums to see if shoes move outward when someone pulls the lever. If not, remove the cables from the shoes, raise the ends, and shoot oil into the sheath. Break the cable loose inside the sheath and continue oiling until the cable moves freely in the sheath.

Need instructions for installing parking brake shoes on a 2001 Dodge 3500 pickup


This is a big job for such a small part. I suggest you repair/replace rotors, pads, and anything else back there while you are at it. You will need to remove both wheels on both sides, as well as the axles (I think). See my earlier post on Rear Rotor removal to see how this is done.

You will need a large spindle nut to remove the axles.

DISASSEMBLY:
Once you have access to the parking brakes inside the rotor hat:
1. Lock out the parking brake w/a pair of Vise grips (on the parking brake cable under the cab)
2. Disengage teh park brake cable from behind the rotor assembly to allow easier disassembly of the parking brake shoes.
3. Disassemble the rear park brake shoes.

REASSEMBLY:
1. Reassemble the rear parking brake shoes. This is a typical, small brake drum configuration. Do one side at a time - so you can see how to reassemble each small part. Keep the springs and parts oriented the same: front to front and interior to interior, etc.
2. Release the parking brake cable
3. Install the disc brake rotor(s)
4. Install the disc brake caliper(s)
5. Install tire & wheel assembly
6. Lower the vehicle

Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the rear wheel hub and bearing with a socket wrench. Back the parking brake shoes away from the rotor using the adjuster star wheel. Remove the parking brake shoe adjuster spring and the shoe adjuster with a socket wrenchDisconnect the hold-down clip and pin for the upper brake shoe so you can remove the upper shoe from the actuator lever with a socket wrenchRemove the return spring from the lower brake shoe and disconnect the shoe actuator lever from the end of the parking brake cable. Detach the hold-down clip and pin from the lower brake shoe and remove the lower brake shoe with a socket wrench.

How to remove rear calipers


  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Matchmark the relationship of the wheel to the axle flange. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Reinstall two lug nuts to retain the rotor.
  4. If the caliper is being removed from the vehicle for replacement or overhaul, perform the following:
    • Disconnect the brake hose from the caliper. Plug the opening in the caliper and the brake hose to prevent fluid loss and system contamination.
    • Detach the parking brake cable by lifting up on one end of the cable spring clip to free the end of the cable from the lever.
  5. Remove the bolt and washer attaching the cable support brake to the caliper body assembly.
  6. Remove the sleeve bolt, then remove the caliper body assembly. Pivot the caliper body up to clear the rotor and then slide it inboard off the pin sleeve.
  7. If the caliper is being removed for shoe and lining replacement or to provide access to the support bracket, rotor of wheel brake components, hang the caliper from suspension using a suitable wire hook so as not to stretch or damage the brake hose or brake cable.
  8. Inspect the pin boot, bolt boot and sleeve for cuts, tears or deterioration. If damaged, replace the boots.
To Install:
  1. Install the caliper assembly, as follows:
    • If not replaced, remove the pin boot from the caliper body assembly and install the small end over the pint sleeve (installed on the caliper support) until the boot seats in the pin groove. This is to prevent cutting the pin boot when the sliding body assembly onto the pin sleeve.
    • Hold the caliper body assembly in position it was removed and start over the end of the pin sleeve. As the caliper body assembly approaches the pin boot, work the large end of the pin boot in the caliper body groove. Then push the caliper body fully onto the pin.
    • Pivot the caliper body assembly down, using care not to damage the piston boot on the inboard shoe. Compress the sleeve boot by hand as the caliper body move into position to prevent boot damage.
    • After the caliper body assembly is in position, recheck the installation of the pad clips. If necessary, use a small prytool to re-seat or center the pad clips on the support abutments.
  2. Install the sleeve bolt and tighten to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  3. Fasten the cable support bracket (with the cable attached) with the retaining bolts and washer. Tighten to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  4. If disconnected, attach the end of the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever by lifting up on the end of the cable spring clip and work the end of the parking brake cable into the notch in the lever.
  5. Unplug and attach the brake hose, if it was disconnected.
  6. Remove the two lug nuts retaining the rotor.
  7. Install the wheel and tire assembly, aligning the marks made during removal.
  8. Carefully lower the vehicle, then bleed the brake system if the brake hose was disconnected.
  9. Firmly depress the brake pedal 3 times to seat the pads against the rotors.

j 21177-A Drum-to-Brake Shoe Clearance Gage

Park Brake Shoe Adjustment

Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution.

Important: The park brake shoes must be adjusted before the park brake cable tension is adjusted.Set the J 21177-A so it contacts the inside diameter of the rotor
  1. Position the J 21177-A over the shoe and the lining at the widest point.
  2. Turn the adjuster nut until the lining just contacts the J 21177-A. Park brake shoe to brake rotor clearance: 0.6604 mm (0.026 in)
  3. Repeat steps 1-3 for the opposite side.
Park Brake Cable Tension Adjustment

Important: Before you adjust the park brake cable tension, verify that the park brake shoes are adjusted to provide a clearance of 0.6604 mm (0.026 in) and the rear disc brake rotors are installed.

  1. Verify the self adjuster lock-out pin has been removed.
  2. Fully apply and release the park brake pedal 3 times.

Look around at posts if you can see any flat head small bolt if not it is rust the only hammer can do this job I saw using a torch too.
