Question about 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

1 Answer

Swagle63 asked, "What problem are you having with the control?"

I converted from the old freon to the new, changing fittings and having mechanic **** out the old stuff, then added the new stuff. My readout started flashing "A/C", so I took it to my mechanic. He said it was the digital controller, a notorious problem on those early digitally-controlled heater/AC's. He said a remanufactured controller is $550, and a brand new one is $700-some! Whoa! The defroster also blows like it has emphysema with the fan on high.

You could try goin to a local junkyard or calling one to see if they have a used one, might be cheaper that way, also your fan might be blowing like it has emphysema because the cabin air filter is most likely plugged, its behind the glove box and pretty simple to replace, hope this helps

How to install an ac expansion valve and step by step instructions.

The part is 22.99 at Autozone,The freon has to be removed, then the old part has to be taken out, then new part installed, then system has to be leak tested, then new freon has to be installed,Since you probably don't have all the tools needed like me,I had my system done by Midas,my evaporator core was clogged up from a mouse nest and air from the blower motor couldn't go thru it,I couldn't take it out of the box cause I would have to unscrew lines and let freon out,so I let Midas do it,my 85 Nissan 720 4x4 is 30 years old,so I had them put a new expansion valve on.It is in the same box as the evaporator core, was only 20 something bucks, plus my truck had the old type freon in it and they put different fittings on the lines to install new type of freon, now my a.c. is ice cold.I recently myself put a new heater core in it and replaced the carpet, and changed the color from black to gray,it is so hot here in Georgia.I looked around on prices and Midas was the best, get a warranty too. Here's my 30 year old truck, had her for 22 years, better than new.

The AC in my 2003 VW Convertible is not chilling enough. What can I do about it?

Your system may just be low on freon. Most auto parts stores sell 134a freon for about $10 a can. If you visit an Autozone store the parts counter personnel might also show you how to add freon to the VW Beetle, it's not hard once you know where the correct port is located. You simply start your car, connect the freon dispensing hose to the AC port (there are two (2) ports, but the hose connection will only fit onto the smaller of the two (2) ports - the low pressure side). Allow the car to run while the can is discharged into the AC system, generally takes 10-15 minutes. Most dispeners have a freon pressure gauge on the hose portion that attaches to the can. Never disconnect a partially empty can unless there is a shutoff valve, and the valve is closed all the way. Better to add the entire can to the AC system.
If you have never added freon to your 2003 VW Beetle, that's the most likely problem. You could also have developed a slow leak in the compressor or AC lines, so I recommend adding freon WITH a sealant in the same can just in case.

The job would cost between $45 and $65 if you take it to a reputible mechanic to perform. That usually includes a full blown pressure test of the AC system. and a whole list of costly recommendations.

What size is the low size ac adaptor for 1992 dodge dakota

What you are looking at is a system made for R12 instead of R134 freon.
Around 1993 most models were switched to the new freon at that time.
If this is the case, you need the adapter fittings sold to convert it, which is sold at most auto parts stores.
Keep in mind you can not mix the two freons, and there may be other components such as the drier and expansion valve that will need to be changed to accept the R134 gas.

How to convert my a/c r12 to 134a my car is mercedes e300 1986

As far as I know you only have to change the compressor and dryer-filter to comply with 134a. Other components from old Freon 12 are safe to use for 134a. There's an Urban (mechanics) legend that you can use a 134a to an r12 system, but you can't use an r12 to a newer 134a system. But be on the safe side, change the compressor and dryer to use 134a or ask an expert on refrigeration.

Hi, I have 2000 Toyota Sienna, after using the AC for some minutes its cut off and never cool again till I switch it off and on it later. I just replace the condenser and re-fill the gas. What could be...

The catalytic converter has no bearing on your air conditioning system. If the compressor is shutting off, it is because of inadequate freon, or air and moisture in the system. When you replaced the condenser, the dryer should have been replaced with a new one. The system should have been completely evacuated of any old freon and fresh freon and oil put back in the system. If the a/c guy didn't change the dryer, then the system has been contaminated with whatever was accumulated inside the old one. If your catalytic converter is bad, the computer will trigger trouble code and the check engine light will come on. Have ethe computer scanned for trouble codes.

it takes R12 freon, but R12 is no longer made because it damaged the Ozone layer, so u must have a automtive repair shop convert the R12 system to the newer R134, this is fairly expensive, about $200

I have a 1996 Ford Taurus GL and need to add freon

if the port you are trying to connect to is bigger than the connector on the hose, then that is the wrong one. that's the high side. you want to connect to the low side, which is a smaller fitting. the fittings for 134a are quick disconnect.

My father passed away leaving me a 1991 linc town car. Air seems to work but does not blow cold. I know he never converted to new freon. could a simple conversion be the solution?

It is possible. It the problem is the compressor. It would be good to change the compressor, drier, and orifice tube. You will also need the conversion kit for the fittings. All of this can easily be bought at the auto parts store. Be sure to vacuum the system and add oil and the freaon. Changing over in the long run will be cheaper, plus you can always buy your own freon, where as leaving it R12, soemone else will need to do it for you and it will cost quite a bit for the freon. In order to convert, compressor, drier, orifice tube, oil, and freon will be about $210. Not a bad investment.
