Question about 2003 Volkswagen Passat

1 Answer

2 months ago I had my car serviced, a new timer and tensioner belt were fitted. 10 days later the turbo packed in. 14 days after this was fixed the alternator belt jumped its housing and a new alternator was fitted. 30 days later and I am now not getting any acceleration when I try to overtake. The error code indicates that the boost pressure maximum limit is not being reached. What might be causing it, and could any of teh previous repairs have caused this to happen. The same garage has done all the work. What questions should I be asking the garage??

How did u know that your turbo died? did you get a check engine light or the mechanic just told you that was the problem? boost pressure max limit not reached can mean a few things but the first thing to check is whether the turbo is spinning up and pushing air into the intake.

i have a feeling that the waste gate is stuck in the open position or something...somehow all of your exhaust is not spinning up the turbo

I've got a BMW 1 series, it went into the garage for a new timer belt, the tensioner had snapped, when I got it back there is a ticking noise when first starting up and until the engine gets w

The timing belt is crucial. And a broken belt can cause bent valves and serious engine damage. Since you state that the belt tensioner was replaced, was the timing belt replaced as well? I assume you have a warranty, and I highly recommend you use it. A new noise coming from where a major repair was just completed is never a good sign.

First my ac fan was not blowing as hard as normal still cooling just not blowing, then two days later my battery warning light came on,10 minutes later while running the electrical system just shut down....

Sounds like the alternator has gone bad. Jump start the car and check the voltage at the battery. You should see around 14 volts if the alternator is working. If you see around 12 the alternator is not charging.

Labor rates and parts pricing various greatly depending on where you are. Your best bet to find the most accurate pricing for your area would be to call some local shops to get some phone quotes.

You can expect anywhere from $300 to $600 to have the alternator replaced at a shop. If you do it yourself you can expect to pay $100 to $275 for the alternator at a parts store.

take the belt off and carefully check to see if any of the pulleys are out of line and check to make sure they spin smooth and true check for bearing wear and noise in any of the pulleys cause it sounds like simply there is a pulley out of line

is the a/c working ok??? shredding the belt may be cause by the a/c compressor problems. the "chunk" maybe not, but shredding tells me something does not spin when it should. I dont know why the mehanic put a new pump on that had a problem with the pulley, it should be smooth. anyhting that the belt runs should be smooth and east to turn, make sure that all of the grooves are clean, no remnants of the old belt.

Put a new belt on it and spray the condenser coil in front of the radiator with a hose when it gets up to temp or the sound starts and see if it stops. Thats what I did today. Flapping/clacking stops for about 10 minutes until thing get hot again.A/C blowing cold air the entire time.

1999 Grand am gt chirping noise

Certain brands (cheapo) of serpentine belt will do this. It is because the new belt is thinner than the old belt. This causes reduced spring tension by the belt tensioning device. Other possible problems are a bad belt tensioner, driving through deep water and getting the belt wet while driving or a defective crankshaft harmonic balancer assembly.
I HATE Dayco brand belts, because they do this a lot. I would have the shop inspect the parts mentioned above. If they are OK, tell them you want a new belt (for free).
