Question about 2005 BMW X5

Hi, I have an BMW X5 56 plate 3.0diesel. 41k miles. I have noticed that there appears to smoke coming from the exhaust upon acceleration. This is happening all of the time. Also, yesterday I lost power (as if the turbo) had failed. I stopped the car and turned off and on again and the power returned. It is still smoking though Thanks Mark Any ideas

Have a go at the Positive Crankcase Valve (PCV). its located under the engine cover towards the rear of the engine in an odd shaped black plastic box alongside the fuel injectors, Dont pay BMW the Big dollars. Buy a filter for $50 AuD on Ebay or the whole unit for $120 AuD. You have to remove the engine covers to do it but thats not so hard really, just a bit involved and takes 10 mins to remove the engine cover. The actual filter is a throw away job, but the whole PCV assembly is just a degrease and clean. Its held in place by four small hex headed bolts, when you lift it you'll find the small can shaped filter pinned underneath. Swap the filter. its VERY unlikely to be your turbo at 41,000m.
The PCV is a known issue that causes smoking and even power loss, BMW actually did a retrofit kit PCV for use in cold climates., Are you in somewhere cold? and another possibility is not using the correct 'Winter diesel' in a cold spot. Very common fault for X5 owners going up to Thredbo or Perisher snowfields in Australia for the first time!

hi get your egr valve removed and cleaned could be sticking open this would cause loss of power and smoke.

Excessive exhaust smoke


You may have a broken ring or scored cylinder wall and piston. Have a cylinder leak down test performed to confirm this. Other causes can be a plugged crankcase ventilation system causing pressure to build in the engine, if that is the case the air cleaner box should have oil in it. The grey color of the smoke means you are burning a lot of oil.

Audi q7 black smoke coming out of exhaust


The reason my audi q7 had heavy smoke was because the diesel fuel injectors were dripping which can be checked by means of a leak test, this was caused by the fuel injection pump depositing micro shreads of metal in to the injectors, 5 of which failed.
If you're problem is the same, you will find that the problem occurs when the engine is hot, when the engine has been ticking over for a short period and then you hit the accelerator the heavy smoke is the excess fuel burning off, equally if the idle period is longer you will notice smoke in you're rear view mirror. Audi are well aware of the common engine faults, proof being in the 3 years or 60000 mile warranty, the only top motor brand that don't offer 3 years unlimited ( Bmw, Merc, lexus, hell kia & hyundi have more confidence), you may think I have been unlucky and landed a bad one, I bought a second one as i thought the same which low and behold i had full injector replacement and £1800 turbo fault. each car developed the faults between 63000 & 77000 miles, if you buy a second hand diesel audi with a 3.0 engine or above you are buying the name not reliability which is proof when you look up audi's on autotrader, there isn't many with more than 150000 miles, the same can't be said about BMW & MERC which have there cars with 250000 plus.

Black smoke points to unburnt fuel. I would start by replacing the spark plugs and wires if you have not done so in the last couple of years.

bluish is oil burning,if your car is smiking worse going up a hill that is piston rings,if you notice it worse coasting down a hill that is valve seals,but have you tried replacing the PCV valve yet,this lets the engine breath like you and me

Jag X TYPE Diesel Black smoke coming from exhaust on acceleration


i had this problem and thought the fuel filter oil filter needed replacing so i have just had a service done but problem is still there but not as bad. been told it could be the AGR valve or a split pipe going to it which recuirculates unused fuel back to burn again. therefore unspent fuel is coming out of the exhaust causing the black smoke. i am still looking for the answer aswell, hope this helps.
