1996 Suburban, after changing the Fule Pump Module with another module, I turn the key over and hear a whirr from the tank but the vehicle will not start. i think the Fuel Pump Module must be bad, but do you think the Ignition Module is bad too? Thanks, Fred

First you need to ck for spark, i fthere is no spark at the spark plugs, you need to find out why......if you have spark, then ck fuel pressure, you must have at least 58-62PSI. A new fuel pump should be good to go, especially if its a AC Delco, or Delphi. I assume you also replaced the fuel filter when it was replaced.

The fuel pump module may not be bad. If you hear whirr that is good. Did you change both of the filters, the one on the fuel pump and the external filter (the one along the frame of the trunk). Also did you clean out the tank? If you did all that the next step would most likly point to fuel injectors.

  3. Release the fuel pressure.
  4. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  5. Remove the fuel tank filler cap.
  6. Drain as much fuel from the tank as possible.
  7. Using suitable hose pinching pliers, clamp the fuel tank filler hose. Clamp the fuel tank filler hose in the location shown ford-05-00-396.gif

  11. Position a suitable lifting device under the fuel tank.
  12. Remove the two fuel tank support strap bolts.
  13. Lower the fuel tank to access the fuel pump module while swinging the fuel tank support straps away from the tank.
  14. Clean the area around the fuel pump mounting flange.
  15. Disconnect the fuel pump module electrical connector and the fuel pump module fuel outlet tube.
  16. Using the special tool, turn the fuel pump module retaining ring counterclockwise and remove it. CAUTION
The fuel pump module must be handled carefully to avoid damage to the float arm, filter and convolute hoses.

1996 GMC Suburban - Quit Running While Driving, Will Not Start

Listen at the back by the fuel tank for a 1 to 2 second prime cycle whirr from the tank when turning the key to run position after it has been off for at least 10 seconds.
No noise means no running pump.
....and no noise means.....
Most likely it will need a new fuel pump....80%
Fuel pump relay 10%
Fuse or bad wiring 10%

The quick fix to get home is to crank the truck to create oil pressure to fire the pump......and while cranking WHACK the tank hard with a 2by4 or something like that....to jar the pump..... and it may start running long enough to get it somewhere to be repaired.
This works 60% of the time on a dead pump.

If you do hear a whirrr.....you most likely need a ignition module or crank or dist pickup.

'96 Chevy 1500 changed fuel pump now wnon't start

You will have to determine if it is fuel you do not have or a no spark problem.

When the key is turned to run position after it has been off for 10 seconds do you hear a prime cycle (fuel pump whirr noise ) at the gas tank for about 2 seconds?
If you DO hear this you most likely have fuel pressure.
If you do NOT hear this and have just changed the fuel pump with a known working good pump....it may be the fuel relay.
And remember...new pumps can be bad.

If you DO hear the whirr........perhaps you do not have spark at the plugs.
Do you have a spare spark plug?
Disconnect one of the plug wires and insert the spark plug you now have.....make sure the plug body is touching metal....(grounded ) and crank the engine....we want to see a spark jumping across the spark plug gap.
No spark?
Then check for these defective parts and chances are ........50% Ignition module.......30% crank pick up........10% coil........10% other (connections.....computer......anti theft....etc )

1986 Lincoln Towncar will not start. I can't hear the fuel pump priming when ignition is the run position; can anybody please help me?

try restting the inertia switch in the trunk. When you turn key to "ON", the fule pump will run for only 5 seonds if the engine does not start. Listen at the fuel tank for humming of the pump. The PCM, Powertrain Control Module controls the fuel pump relay. So, when you turn key on, the power relay powers up the PCM and the PCM powers up the fuel pump relay.

Remove fuel pump from tank ford windstar 98

To gain access to the fuel pump, it is necessary to remove the fuel tank.
  1. Depressurize the fuel system and remove the fuel tank from the vehicle.
  2. Remove any dirt that has accumulated around the fuel pump module attaching flange, to prevent it from entering the tank during service.
  3. Turn the fuel pump module locking ring counterclockwise using a locking ring removal tool or a brass drift and remove the locking ring.
  4. Remove the fuel pump module.
  5. Remove the seal gasket and discard it.

To install:
  1. Put a light coating of grease on a new seal ring to hold it in place during assembly. Install it in fuel tank ring groove.
  2. Insert the fuel pump module into the fuel tank, then secure it in place with the locking ring. Tighten the ring until secure.
  3. Install the tank in the vehicle.
  4. Install a minimum of 10 gallons of fuel and check for leaks.
  5. Install a pressure gauge on the throttle body valve and turn the ignition ON for 3 seconds. Turn the key OFF , then repeat the key cycle five to ten times until the pressure gauge shows at least 30 psi.
  6. Check for fuel leaks at the fittings.
  7. Remove the pressure gauge.
  8. Start the engine and check for fuel leaks.

No longer hearing the "whirr" of the electric fuel pump

if this is a no start then the next step is to pull the gas tank and replace the fuel pump module, the fact you heard the pump in many cases means the pumps shaft bearings were worn out, they are pretty silent for the most part.
