Oil pressure bounces from 0 to 40 when below 800 rpm where is oil pump located internal or external?

The oil pump is internal in the oil pan. this maybe a bad sending unit on the motor or guage. I wouold check the sending unit first.

How do I check and possibly replace the engine oil pressure sensor in a 2006 GMC Envoy Denali?


Oil Pressure Test Check for proper oil pressure at the sending unit passage with an externally mounted mechanical oil pressure gauge. A tachometer may also be needed, as some specifications may require running the engine at a specific RPM.
  1. While the engine is cold, locate and remove the oil pressure sending unit.
  2. Following the manufacturer's instructions, connect a mechanical oil pressure gauge and, if necessary, a tachometer to the engine.
  3. Start the engine and allow it to idle.
  4. Note and record the oil pressure reading when the engine is cold. The engine may need to run at a specified RPM, if so check the vehicle's specification.
  5. Run the engine until normal operating temperature is reached.
  6. Check the oil pressure reading again with the engine hot and record the value. Turn off the engine.
Compare the hot oil pressure reading to the specification. If the reading is low, check the cold pressure reading against the specification. If the cold pressure is well above the specification, and the hot reading was lower than the specification, the engine may have the wrong viscosity oil. Change the oil, making sure to use the proper grade and quantity, and then repeat the test.
Low oil pressure readings could be attributed to internal component wear, pump related problems, a low oil level, or oil viscosity that is too low. High oil pressure readings could be caused by an overfilled crankcase, too high of an oil viscosity or a faulty pressure relief valve.

Look for the oil pressure sending unit on the block or the cylinder head on the V-6 or V-8 models. --- OIL PRESSURE TEST Check for proper oil pressure at the sending unit passage with an externally mounted mechanical oil pressure gauge (as opposed to relying on a factory installed dash-mounted gauge). A tachometer may also be needed, as some specifications may require running the engine at a specific rpm.
  1. With the engine cold, locate and remove the oil pressure sending unit.
  2. Following the manufacturer's instructions, connect a mechanical oil pressure gauge and, if necessary, a tachometer to the engine.
  3. Start the engine and allow it to idle.

If the cold pressure is well above the specification, and the hot reading was lower than the specification, you may have the wrong viscosity oil in the engine. Change the oil, making sure to use the proper grade and quantity, then repeat the test. Low oil pressure readings could be attributed to internal component wear, pump related problems, a low oil level, or oil viscosity that is too low. High oil pressure readings could be caused by an overfilled crankcase, too high of an oil viscosity or a faulty pressure relief valve.

2004 tdi 4 motion dosnt start and says low oil preasure on the desh


If this is correct then your situation is more serious than you think. Think of it as your blood pressure, that's not good is it? Check your oil level with the orange dip stick. If your oil is at the top of knurled part of the stick it will tell you at least you have some oil in there, it should be lower once the pump is operating.
If it's way below the stick, this will tell you oil is below the level where the oil pump pick-up is at. The pump is not able to pick up oil from the oil pan and starving your engine which could end in a very expensive disaster.
If your level is fine and it does this, then you may have a
  1. Oil pump faulty
  2. Oil filter very dirty
  3. Oil filter faulty
  4. Loosing oil pressure due to internal system blocked or leaking externally or internally
The procedure for diagnosing oil pressure problem is using an analog oil pressure gauge connected to service ports from both the bottom and the top end of the engine. Without running the engine, a tool to turn the oil pump manually and pressurize the system while reading the gauge data.

One thing for sure.....DO NOT START YOUR ENGINE UNTIL YOU ARE SURE YOU HAVE OIL PRESSURE!
Doing so will damage your internal moving parts and may seize the engine from oil starvation.

Most likely the oil pressure sensor is bad. Its located in the very rear of engine on top of bell housing area.

your oil sensor comes on at less than ten psi, you may have internal engine damage how many miles on engine, any gum up inside engine, you can try to put on a high pressure high volume melling oil pump to try to help for the time being, but you may need to have it torn and repaired.

I have a 1993 jaguar sov, 4.0 strait 6 cylinder, the oil gauge drops down to nothing and the car starts running rough, is the oil pump internal or external, and how big of a job is it to fix?


Before you tear into the engine remove the oil pressure sender and install a hand held mechanical gauge and check the pressure. The sending unit coud be bad. As far as the rough running.. when was your last tune up?? The gauge could also drop to zero due to insufficient RPM's because of the rough running. Does it have any knocks when the pressure is at zero??

Hi Noby!

I gather from your multiple posts with the same problem that you weren't able to locate an Isuzu cargo truck in the "Add Specific product" window... but I'm assuming you have one with diesel engine and your problem is a low oil pressure indication.

First, you need to make sure there is the proper amount of oil in the crankcase... so check the oil, add if needed, then see if the problem persists.

If so, verify that there actually is a low il pressure condition and this is not just a faulty indication. If you have a mechanical oil pressure gauge, we'll assume it is accurate... but if it is electrical, you will need to obtain a service pressure gauge. When you have this, remove the oil pressure sending unit from the engine block, and with the right adapters, fit the service gauge to the sending unit hole... then check the oil pressure situation with the more accurate service gauge. Note if the low oil pressure is only at idle, or if it persists throughout the RPM range.

If the low oil pressure clears at RPM, you probably have a problem in the oil pump (worn) or oil pressure relief valve (stuck), but that is usually a part of the pump assembly.

If the low oil pressure is persistent throughout the RPM range, the possible causes still include the pump but also take in loose crankshaft main or rod bearings or possibly an internal leak in the pressurized oil galley circuit, such as a lost galley plug (metal plug used to close the hole where the internal oil passage was machined/drilled). And there are other possibilities...

A temporary help with this problem is to go to a higher viscosity (thicker) oil, and do a filter change when the oil is changed. The thicker oil does not escape loose bearing fits as easily, thus helping build pressure.
