Bearings and seal going into differential are shot. outer nuts, drive-shaft etc are disconnected but cannot remove housing. anything I need to look at? thanks.

Oil leak on rear diff where drive shaft enters diff


That's called your pinion seal. You can change it but when removing the driveshaft yoke, it is ESSENTIAL that you count the exact number of turns and partial turns it took to remove the nut and that you only tighten it that exact number. Make a mark on the nut and the shaft then make a corresponding mark on the outside of your socket and on the housing so you can count. You can use a large pipe wrench to hold the yoke from turning when you are removing the nut. If you have any up and down movement at the yoke before you begin, you have a deeper problem such as a failed inner or outer pinion bearing. To replace the outer isn't difficult but if the inner has failed, you will either need a professional to press it on and off the shaft and to re- set the clearances or just replace the differential.(sometimes cheaper) Always check the fluid level when doing that job.

  1. Remove the axle shaft; refer to Axle Shaft in this section.
Axle Shaft Removal

YOU HAVE TO SAFELY RAISE SUPPORT VECHICLE MAKE SURE ITS ON A SOLID LEVEL GROUND.THEN YOU REMOVE THE WHEELS THE BRAKE DRUM OR DISC.THEN YOU REMOVE THE NUTS THAT ATTACH THE OUTER SEAL RETAINER AND BRAKE BACKING PLATETO THE AXLE SHAFT TUBE.DISCARD THE NUTS.REMOVE AXLE SHAFT FROM HOUSING.WITH AN AXLE PULLER ATTACHED TO A SLIDE HAMMER.DISCARD INNER AXLE SEALPOSITION THE AXLE SHAFT IN A VISE.REMOVE THE RETAINING RING BY DRILLING A 1/4 HOLE ABOUT 3/4 OF THE WAY THROUGH THE RING. How do you change a wheel seal on a mercury mountaneer 1998 rear end


Axle Vent
NOTE: If the vent cannot be cleared, it must be installed new.
A plugged vent will cause excessive seal lip wear due to internal pressure buildup. If a leak occurs, check the vent. Make sure the vent hose is not kinked. Remove the hose from the vent nipple and clear the hose of any foreign material. While the hose is removed, pass a length of mechanics wire or a small diameter Allen wrench in and out of the vent to clean it. Connect the hose when done. The vent is located on the drivers side top of axle housing.
If you plan on doing most repairs yourself I would suggest buying a Haynes or Chilton manual for your particular vehicle. Or there are some data disks on e.bay($12-$15) For a cost of under $25, you can almost do any repair yourself with these manuals.Also there are online manuals like the site called ALLDATA where guides can be viewed for a fee. All these solutions will save you time and money, and give peace of mind over correct repairs. I can post you some procedures here also.

                                                            PINION FLANGE & OIL SEAL

                                                            CAUTION: Following procedure must be used to retain proper pinion bearing preload. Failure to follow procedure may result in premature axle assembly or component failure. Ensure pinion bearing preload is checked before disassembly, as previous pinion bearing preload will be used during reassembly.

                                                            Removal

                                                            1. Raise and support vehicle. Scribe reference mark on drive shaft-to-pinion flange on differential for reassembly reference. Remove bolts and "U" joint straps at pinion flange on differential.
                                                            Disconnect drive shaft from differential.
                                                            2. Remove rear wheels and brake drums to prevent any drag that may affect pinion bearing preload reading. Using INCH-lb. torque wrench, measure amount of force required to rotate pinion. This is pinion bearing preload. Record pinion bearing preload for reassembly reference.
                                                            3. Using Holder (6719), hold pinion flange. Remove pinion nut and washer. Scribe reference mark on pinion flange-to-pinion for reassembly reference. Using appropriate puller, remove pinion flange from pinion. Remove oil seal from axle housing.

                                                            Installation

                                                            1. Ensure oil seal surface in axle housing is clean. Coat lip of oil seal with gear lube. Install oil seal using appropriate seal installer. Drive oil seal into axle housing until oil seal installer contacts axle housing.
                                                            2. Install pinion flange on pinion with reference mark aligned. Using appropriate pinion flange installer, install pinion flange on pinion.

                                                            CAUTION: Washer must be installed on pinion with convex side of washer facing outward (away from pinion).

                                                            3. Install washer on pinion with convex side of washer facing outward (away from pinion). Install NEW pinion nut. Tighten pinion nut to 210 ft. lbs. (285 N.m). Rotate pinion several times to seat pinion bearings.

                                                            CAUTION: DO NOT overtighten or loosen then retighten pinion nut when adjusting pinion bearing preload. If pinion nut is overtightened, collapsible spacer on pinion must be replaced.

                                                            4. Rotate pinion using INCH-lb. torque wrench. Rotating torque should be equal to reading recorded in removal step 2) , plus 5 INCH lbs. (.056 N.m). If rotating torque is low, tighten pinion nut in small increments until proper rotating torque is obtained.
                                                            5. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure using NEW "U" joint straps and bolts. Ensure all reference marks are aligned. Tighten bolts to specification. Check lubricant level and add if necessary.

                                                            Section 05-02A: Axle, Integral Carrier — 8.8-Inch Ring Gear 1994 Town Car, Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis. Workshop Manual REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Axle Shaft NOTE: Whenever replacing the rear axle lubricant, use Rear Axle Lubricant XY-90-QL (ESP-M2C154-A) or equivalent.
                                                            Removal

                                                            1. Raise vehicle to desired working height. Refer to Section 00-02 . Remove rear wheel (1007) and tire assembly. Remove rear disc brake calipers (2552) and rear disc brake rotors (2C026) .




                                                            1. Clean all dirt from area of axle housing cover with a wire brush and/or cloth.

                                                            Installation
                                                            NOTE: Check for presence of rear axle shaft o-ring (4A332) on the spline end of the shaft and install if not present.

Install the rear axle shaft retaining u-washer on the button end of the axle shaft splines, then pull the shaft outboard until the shaft splines engage and the rear axle shaft retaining u-washer seats in the counterbore of the differential side gear .
                                                            1. Position the differential pinion shaft through the differential case and differential pinion gears , aligning the hole in the differential pinion shaft with the lock bolt hole. Apply Rear Axle Lubricant to differential pinion shaft lock pin . Add Motorcraft Rear Axle Lubricant XY-90-QL or KL (ESP-M2C154-A) or equivalent until it is 6-14mm (1/4-9/16 inch) below bottom of fill hole. Add 118.3 mL (4 oz) of Ford Additive Friction Modifier C8AZ-19B546-A (EST-M2C118-A) or equivalent to Traction-Lok axles. Install fill plug and tighten to 20-41 Nm (15-30 lb-ft).
                                                            1. Install rear brake anti-lock sensor indicator . Tighten retaining bolt to 4.5-6.8 Nm (40-60 lb-in).
                                                            1. Install rear disc brake caliper and rear disc brake rotor .
                                                            1. Install wheels and tires.

                                                            1. Insert Rear Bearing Remover T85L-1225-AH in bore and position it behind bearing so tangs on tool engage bearing outer race. Remove rear wheel bearing and inner wheel bearing oil seal as a unit, using Impact Slide Hammer T50T-100-A.

                                                            1. Lubricate the rear wheel bearing with Rear Axle Lubricant.



                                                            1. Install rear wheel bearing into the housing bore using Axle Tube Bearing Replacer T78P-1225-A.

                                                            NO - Here are the steps involved....

                                                            Raise the vehicle and support it on axle stands. Drain the lubricant from the transaxle.
                                                            1. Remove the front wheels and splash pan. Raise the tab on the wheel hub locknut, and then have someone apply the brakes as you loosen the nut.
                                                            2. Remove the tow nuts, bushings, and washers, then disconnect the stabilizer bar from the steering knuckle.
                                                            3. Remove the clinch bolts and nuts, then pry the lower control arm downward in order to separate the steering knuckle and lower ball joint. Be careful not to damage the ball joint dust cover.

                                                            On the left side:
                                                            1. Insert a lever (for automatic transaxles, you'll have to use a chisel) between the driveshaft and transaxle case (don't go in too for, or you will damage the seal). Tap the end of the pry bar or chisel lightly to pull the shaft out of the case just until it unlocks.
                                                            1. Remove the driveshaft locknut from the center of the brake rotor. Pull the front hub outward and toward the rear. Disconnect the driveshaft from the wheel hub. If necessary, use a puller. Then, pull the driveshaft straight out of the transaxle, supporting the joint on the transaxle side to prevent damage to the seal. Seal the transaxle opening with a clean rag.

                                                            On the right side:
                                                            1. Insert a lever between the joint shaft and driveshaft, then gently tap on the outer end of the lever to separate the two shafts.
                                                            1. Remove the driveshaft locknut, then pull the front hub outward and toward the rear. Disconnect the driveshaft from the front hub. If necessary, use a puller. Then, disconnect the driveshaft from the cross-shaft completely.
                                                            2. If it is necessary to remove the cross-shaft, remove the cross-shaft mounting bracket bolts, then remove the shaft and bracket as an assembly, being careful not to disturb the position of differential gears. Cover the opening in the differential case with a clean rag.
                                                            1. Installation is the reverse of removal, but note these points:
                                                            1. Check the transaxle oil seal for damage and replace it if necessary.
                                                            2. Replace the clips at the inner ends of the driveshaft or cross-shaft where they are locked into the differential gears in the transaxle.
                                                            3. Install the shafts into the transaxle carefully to avoid damage to the oil seal. Push the joint in on the differential side. Check the differential gears for alignment before attempting to install the shafts. If they are not aligned, turn them with your finger, as necessary.
                                                            4. After installation, pull the hub forward to make sure the driveshaft remains locked in the transaxle.
                                                            5. Install a new locknut onto the outer end of the driveshaft, adjusting wheel bearings as described in . Crimp the tabs over after they are aligned with the groove in the driveshaft.
                                                            6. Tighten the stabilizer bar link nut until 1 in. (25mm) of thread is exposed.
                                                            7. Torque the lower control arm-to-ball joint nut and bolt to 32-40 ft. lbs. (43-54 Nm).
                                                            8. Torque the control link for the lower arm and stabilizer bar to 9-13 ft. lbs. (12-18 Nm); except for the 1988-89 626s and MX-6s on which it should be 12-17 ft. lbs. (16-23 Nm).

                                                            Axle Shaft Removal
                                                            1. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02 .
                                                            1. Remove the wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 204-04 .
                                                            1. Remove the differential housing cover (4033).
                                                              1. Loosen the bolts and drain the lubricant from the rear axle housing (4010).
                                                              1. Remove the bolts.
                                                              1. Remove the differential housing cover.
                                                            Remove the rear brake disc (2C026). For additional information, refer to Section 206-04 .

                                                            Seal Removal

                                                              Using the special tools, remove the rear wheel bearing and wheel bearing oil seal together.

                                                              • For 4.0L SOHC and 4.0L EI with limited slip rear axles and 5.0L vehicles, use SAE 75W-140 High Performance Rear Axle Lubricant F1TZ-19580-B or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSL-M2C192-A.
                                                              • For 4.0L SOHC and 4.0L EI with conventional rear axles, use SAE 80W-90 Premium Rear Axle Lubricant XY-80W90-QL or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSP-M2C197-A.

                                                            That works fine on a relatively new vehicle but one that has run in salt etc you'll save a lot of time if you remove the steering knuckle completey by separating lower ball joint and outer tie rod end ball joint and bring the whole steering knuckle to a bench to separate the hub/bearing. Soak everything with penetrant, loosen the bolts a few turns and try hitting right on the bolt heads. I also made a very sharp wedge from a chisel and rammed it hard on the other side to seoarate the hub. It will finally come apart then you'll see all the **** that was binding it due to an alumininum knuckle re-acting with a steel hub. Clean the hole and grease everything and fit new bearings
