One of the best ways to get alot of miles out of an automatic transmission is to have the trans fluid flushed out and replaced every 60,000 miles. dropping the trans pan to change the filter and fluid will only replace about one third of the fluid because the torque convertor holds the other two thirds of the fluid and dropping the pan will not get the fluid out of the torque convertor. a trans flush will replace all the fluid and mechanics will also run a cleaner through the trans to eliminate any varnish and small metal and fiber particles in it before they replace the trans fluid. a well maintained automatic trans can go 200,000 to 250,000 miles before any problems occur.

How long a transmission lasts depends on several factors. 1. What type of roads do you typically drive on (hilly, flat, etc.) 2. How often do you change the fluid and filter, 3. Is it an automatic or a manual unit, and lastly, whether you use your vehicle to do a lot of heavy towing.

there are some vehicles that have unreliable transmissions no matter what you do, but proper maintenance and care will still go a long way in keeping them on the road and out of the shop.

200,000 if you change the fluid every 2 or 3 years or 30,000 or so. That's if you never have any common issues for that production year and of coarse drive kind of easy.

What is wrong with it? May be a simple fix. If it's ok I have seen them go over 250,000 miles no problem with fluid and filter changes.

1997 pontiac bonneville transmission

Yes, Brion, all 1997 pontiac bonneville cars that left the factory to be sold at a new car dealer had a transmission.
That is not to say that all 1997 pontiac bonnevilles had a transmission, but probably 99 % of them did.
New pontiac engines of that year may very well have been used in an assortment of applications, without a transmission.
I hope this helps you.

I have a PONTIAC BONNEVILLE LIV6 3.8.. 2002.. Will a 3800 motor 2002 work in my car. . Does it need to be same year??.

In the olden days of cars, engine swaps were commonplace. Simply adapt the transmission, motor mounts, fuel line, and few other things and off you go. Today, however, cars are computer-controlled. Wiring harnesses are made specifically for certain engines and the ECMs are programmed for them and them only. This is not to say that you CAN'T change out one engine for another, but you have to be prepared to expect more than a simple bolt-it-in-and-go operation. You would be better off in most cases rebuilding what you got.

2002 pontiac bonneville transmission jerks or bumps when shifting, however not all the time. Can go one or two days without doing it or once it starts if you stop and turn off the engine and start the car...

Had the same exact type of problem. Sometimes the transmission would **** or jump when the car shifted gears and sometimes it would not. Drained the transmission fluid and replaced the filter. Did not fix the problem.

Here is what fixed my problem. I replaced the Mass Air Flow Sensor. It cost about $150.00. From what I was able to find out the mass air flow sensor is tied into the PCM module that tells the car when to shift.

Hope this if helpful.

Transmission fluid

the tube is on the right side of the engine near the back. Remove the dipstick and add fluid with a funnel. When you check the fluid level, do so with the engine running in park. Be sure to buy the appropriate fluid for your make.
