Question about 2001 Nissan Maxima

2 Answers

My 2001 Nissan runs great until I take my foot off the gas. Then the Tach drops to zero immediately and it the car stalls. It restarts easily but only runs as long as I hold my foot on the pedal to keep the RPM at or above 700. This problem started suddenly. What could be wrong?

Comment by the FixYa Moderator Staff:

We do not think that the fuel filter has anything to do with your issue. So, we would not recommend changing it.

We do not think that the TPS (throttle position sensor) is also not part of your problem.

However, we do agree that the IDLE AIR CONTROL valve could be your problem. If the valve does not pass a fixed amount of air into the engine, the car will not idle.

You most likely just need the tach repaired, they do fail. There is a company called Speedotach that repairs these as well as others, just google it

Tach. drop's to zero while driving 70 ?

I have had the almost same problem twice. A 'thump', like the engine missed a fire and tach drops. Seems OK after restart. Electrical? Timing chain slip?
Has 135,000 mile. Any clues?

1.Start by changing plugs and wires. 2.Check for vacuum leaks. With the engine running, wigglr every hose you can see, to make sure nothing is loose or cracked. 3.Change fuel filter. 4.Check timing. 5.Check air control valve. 6.Check idle control sensor.

Sounds like it could be the throttle position sensor.
