Question about 1997 Chevrolet Suburban

2 Answers

My 97 Suburban starts fine if driven everyday. If not driven for 1 or 2 days, it often has a horrible time trying to start. It turns over repeatedly before eventually firing. Once it's started, it may or may not hesitate. It seems that roughly 1 out of 10 starts it starts and runs perfectly with no hesitation at all. The other 9 times it has a really bad hesitation. By hesitation I mean, the motor seems to stop and then "catch up". At it's worst, if I really rev it up the exhaust will sputter and bang. The hesitation happens whether the truck is in gear or not. When in gear and at a stop, I can feel it kind of lurching forward as it "recovers" from the hesitation. These hesitations are almost rythmic. Roughly every 2-3 seconds. They occur when the vehicle is at rest regardless of the transmission position as well as in motion at any speed. The plugs, distributor cap, and rotor button have been replaced within the last year. At the time that I replaced the cap, I thought it might have been a fuel issue because it wouldn't start. I "tested" a fuel port in the engine compartment that resembles a valve stem on a tire. I'm not a mechanic, so the extent of my test was to push the stem in and see that fuel was squirting out therefore reaching that point. This is all the information that I can think to give off the top of my head that might be related. Thanks in advance for any help. I'll do my best to provide any further information if or as needed.

Your fuel pump is in the tank and the fuel pump check valve is is malfunctioning. You need to replace the fuel pump. To test newer fuel pumps like your you have to put a gage on the valve you pressed in and turn the key on and look at the fuel pressure if it goes to 50 PSI then turn key off if it drops below 20 psi with 30 seonds the fuel pump check valve is bad. Replace with OEM part from the dealer. after market part fuel pumps burn up quick. also change the fuel pump and fuel filter. this is a 4 hour job for a first timer mechanic the pump is causeing all of your problems. Let me know if you want detailed information to repalce the pump. it cost about $195.00 does it have duel tanks? if it does the switching valve may be defective as well.

Probably low fuel pressure. Fuel filter first. Replace the fuel pump after testing if pressure is low. You may need to let it sit overnight. I recommend you have a shop look at it that is familiar with your type of vehicle. You will want to replace the fuel filter anyway when you replace a pump so try it first. Fuel pump is in the tank. Do not put an aftermarket pump in, go AC Delco. Aftermarket pumps do not last.

If i let my 96 suburban sit for a couple of days it wont start but if i drive it everyday it starts up fine

If it cranks but won't start you might have a fuel pump issue that is intermitent or a plugged fuel filter. You can check this with a pressure gauge at the end of the fuel line.

97 Gmc suburban 1500, engine tries to turn over but will not start. Usually happens after not being driven for a day, And, there is a gas odor coming from the engine area.

Anytime you have an odor of RAW GASOLINE, it is wise to discontinue the running of the engine till it located and corrected. Neglecting this fact could lead to an UNHEALTHY situation. Hoping you're getting my message. The reason it develops the problem after sitting a day is because the fuel that is SUPPOSED to be waiting in the fuel rail for the engine to start , has now leaked out and is not there FOR THE ENGINE TO RUN, so it cranks, NO START. Hope this helps.

Battery needs jump start if car is not driven for 3 days.

u either have a shorted cell in the battery or the system has a current draw like a glove box light being left on, try disconnecting the battery the next time you leave it, if it starts ok then u have a current draw and need to find the source of that draw.
