Thanks for the help -- But I need a little more help, I think the battery has to be hooked up(to starter-- main power) then I toggle the switch to the coil (pos. side) and the use a push button type switch for the starter(also I'll have to run fuel hose to the fuel pump) How does this sound ??

You need two toggle switches connected to the battery positive side. one should be connected to the starter trigger wire, the other to the ignition coil. once connected turn the coil switch on and then toggle the starter to make the engine turn (you can also use a push button instead of toggle for starter). To shut engine off just turn the coil toggle off. You need to use at least fourteen gauge wire for starter. coil can be a bit smaller.

I can'nt find the top mounting bolt on my 1974 vw super beetles starter i cant seem to get to it

The starter motor is held in position by 2 bolts, the top one also secures the engine to the gearbox. The head of this bolt is a special D shape which engages into the body of the Starter motor. To undo, from the rear o/side wing, reach down behind the fan housing and you'l; find a nut (17mm) with a small amount of the bolt coming through it. Use suitable spanner to undo (turning away from you) If not been off foe a while may find that after a few revolutions all starts to turn. This just means head of bolt has become disengaged. reposition with a long screwdriver and start again.

1974 VW BUG HEAD TORQUE VALUES

If I remember correctly, head bolts are set at 26foot pounds, rockers at16foot pounds Always seemed low to me and was likely the reason that i've seen several with the heads falling off the block. If this is not an air cooled engine, disregard those numbers. If air cooled no sealant is necessary. Doing this from memory so I could be wrong. So, double check this info before using it.

Starter motor just clicks, not cranking : knowledge question

you mention it almost started which suggest the motor turned over... if it did that it's not seized. i would hook the jumpers on for about 15 minutes before you even attempt to start the car. if the starter still won't work... hit it with a hammer as you attempt to start it... if it starts up you likely need a new starter.

1973 should be a 1600 if someone didn't change it. Have you tried spraying carb cleaner into the carb to see if it will fire. If not, you might need to change the points and plugs

Wont start battery good altenator good, how to remove starter

The starter bolt actually goes through the motor mount so in order to remove the starter you must support the engine with and engine support or hoist. (some put a jack underneath the oil pan which is not an approved method but it works if that's all you have) Other than that you seem to have the rest under control.

There is a bolt that runs through the starter into the back of the car right in front of the bolwer of the engine. there should only be that one bolt. there is a regular nut on the end of the bolt. take the nut off and the bolt will come right on out.
