You can tap right into your headlight wire, keep in mind high and low beams use a test light to find out what is what.

Wiring new plow light in a 1988 Jeep Cherokee, bought universal plow light kit 1311100 to replace old light on a Meyers setup.

sold my 88's (had 2, one yours, and one Comanche)
sold in 2000 year, ran hard and over 250k miles each.
the answer is the same,as all cars, for sure..
you have an added relay for lights.(aux)
this relay prevents overloading the cars H/L wiring and fusing
so there are 2 parts, there, a relay and a fuse inline added.
the fuses are are for fire safety. (the battery can do 500+ amps ok?)
Relay mounted somewhere, and...
the coil pin 1, ground. car body ground is ok.
then the relay coil 2 wire to the H/L low beam wire,or tail light wire using and inline 5amp fuse , to protect that very expensive H?L switch in that jeep,
tail lamp wire also means PARKING lamps. TODAY.

Contactors are those switch part of relay not the coil.
then contactor, power in pin to one more fuse, 15amp to battery +
and each contactor out to your plow lights. (load)

the when H/L are on the relay closes and the Plow lights work
if you google this there are zillions of wiring diagrams for this
even 4wd offroad light bars wired the same way.

there you go, how to wire AUX lights on any vehicle.

Car wiring diagram

I don't know how your vehicle is wired but the typical lighting circuit is similar to that used by many vehicles.

The wire you seek is the output to the headlight circuit from the main light switch - if it is a separate switch. It wouldn't be practical if combined with the dipswitch. A testlamp would easily identify the correct wire.

Installing an additional switch in that wire (a 3 terminal change over switch) would send the feed either to the plough lights relay or the headlamps, though it is possible the rear fog light(s) wouldn't be able to be used with the plough lights.

I suggest you don't try the same modification when you buy a later model computerised truck.

On my 1997 gmc truck when plow light switch is turned on one truck headlight goes out and plow light on that side comes on but other truck headlight stays on and that plow light does not come on..

This is just an idea, I may be wrong but any input is helpful, right? I would think that the switch that controls the plow lights is designed to alternate between the circuits for the truck light and the plow light. If the trucks headlight switch is turned on then the circuit is closed and turnes on the light. When the plow light switch is turned on it may cut the hot side of the circuit going to the headlight and engage the hot wire to the plow light. The headlight and plow light may share a common ground. If they don't share a common ground then the plow switch may cut the ground wire opening the circuit. If you can't find a solution you can always wire the plow lights directly to the battery with the same switch or a new toggle switch and then turn on the parking lights only on the truck. On most GM cars and trucks there is a space in the fuse pannel that is for a power accesory. It is basically a fuse slot that is empty labeled ACC. This is a 12V hot power source and you would run the positive wire here then ground the neg to the chassis. This way if you forget to shut off the toggle it will cut the hot when the key is shut off. When running the wire it is near the hood release able and you may be able to run the wire thru there and not drill a new hole. I've done this for neon lights under cars as well as stereo systems requiring an amplifier. If you drill a new hole even though its under the hood I would put a little blue RTV silicone over the new hole to prevent moisture from getting past the fire wall or road salt.
