SOURCE: Blown main fuse on 2003 mazda protege 5.

There are two bolts on the side of the fuse itself. Under the fuse box on each side. Unbolt those and it will come out.

follow top rad hose from radiator to motor, thermostat is under housing that hose is attached to.

they're underneath the plastic deck cover in the back, where the speakers are. -just a few plastic fasteners and the wire connector for the rear light, and it'll pop right off. -just did it myself this weekend

How to change a thermostat in mazda protege 2003


2_28_2012_3_28_55_am.gifThe lower radiator hose follow it to the engine block You woll remove 2 bolt 12mm or 14mm. there you pull out the thermostat. when you install you need a new thermostat gasket.The thermostat has a air bleeder nipple that has to be up. When you fill the radiator and you start the vehicle the thermostat will open up when it is warmed and coolant will sink down there you fill the radiator up always keeping you eye on the temperature gauge. Also fill the resovoir.2_28_2012_3_34_36_am.gif

2003 Protege 5 overheating on long runs (> 20 min). Overheated today while driving at interstate speeds for > 15 min. Lost the coolant. Refilled with coolant. Return drive maintained normal engine...


Sounds like you have coolant leak if you are loosing coolant or a bad thermostat. I would replace the thermostat, they run about $10. The other fan is an aux fan and will only run when the a/c unit is on.

I had the same problem a couple of years ago. It is actually located on the bottom of the engine. I have no clue why. They are usually located on the top for easy access. Follow the hose coming from the bottom of the radiator to the engine block.
