Question about 1999 Saturn SL

1 Answer

Transmission? I bought my car last June from a used car dealership. When I got it I realized it hesitates before switching into reverse, then bangs into it. The check engine light came on and when it was put on the machine it said transmission. They turned it off and it has yet to come back on. It only bangs into reverse when it hasn't been running for a few hours, like in the beginning of my day and at the end, but not after I've been driving it for a bit. It's been like this for over a year now and passed inspection, but the other day when I was driving it in the morning it seemed to have been stuck at 2000 rpms for a bit and wouldn't go down for about 2 minutes even after gassing it but it hasn't happened again, yet. Is it about to die?

You should highly consider a new valve body, filter and new fluid before this unit malfunctions enough to tottally burn the complete transmission. This occurs when that valve body applies two circuits at once, then its toast

Reverse lights stopped working on 2005 jeep grand cherokee. bulbs and fuses good. Dealership and aftermarket do not offer a neutral safety/reverse light switch. Any suggestions greatly appreciated

totally untrue but using the wrong name
ask counter man for PRNDL switch, on side of transmission A./T
and tell him which of 2 transmissions used, there,
the only line pages at jeep cover this.(parts online) why not look?

the shifter uses a cable , this cable goes under car
this other end goes to the manual lever on side of the trans
this lever has a PRNDL switch on every a/t made (most cars)
when in R, mode, the switch closes and the 12vdc leaves there
to the 2 rear backup lights, and they glow.
sure check fuses, first , for ever and ever. that.
ive posted the GC FSM links now like 100 times. so will skip that

but what trans?
45RFE box.
on some jeeps the switch (sadly) was moved to the solenoid module.
called soleniod packaage

but you need to learn what transmission is there.
or just what first, or you will buy the wrong parts.

does this help. surely the dealer will answer you.
even look up VIN in their database and see
what trans is there, no grease on knuckels at all.
the trans does have a plate on the side that reads.
BLA BLA.. full id and serial.

My car cannot go into reverse, but can change all into other six gears

It sounds like bad transmission. :( . You may also ask your dealership if there is any reverse switch that can cause the transmission not to gear in reverse. Good Luck!

Reverse hesitates after car is warmed up

When reverse goes the trans comes out &
get rebuilt
those clutches are the first in & last out of the case on
a rear drive vehicle
You provide nothing,no make,model,year nothing
The trans is worn out done

2003 lincoln ls.... harsh reverse......transmission has been rebuilt & pcm has been reprogramed......

Was the Solenoid Shift Valve & Pressure
Pack, in trans replaced ?

You do realize that your transmission should have lasted
many more years.

They fail because the fluid is not changed
every 30,000 miles

2004 dodge stratus over 110,000 bought used. When putting car in reverse occasionally it hesitates to go. Also the car shuts off once in awhile if put in reverse. Is the tranny going?

I does sound like a transmission issue, how old is the fluid?

Also, even if changed recently, was it given the specified fluid or the the shop fill it with universal fluid and just add a modifier? These transmissions are very picky, you should always use the actual ATF +4 and NEVER use the universal + an additive no matter what the oil change place says (bring your own).

If you do not know how old the fluid is or if it has the correct type, charge the fluid and filter, you might get lucky.

Hope this helps.

The transmission under hard acleration hesitates 99 dodge dieasel

It sounds to me that the clutch material in the transmission might be breaking down. Before too long I would have the transmission rebuilt or replaced. If you wait too much longer the transmission will start to slip and pretty soon you will have NO gears but first and reverse.

We just bought a 1999 ford explorer for our daughter, when taking off, sometimes the transmission appearred to hesitate in switching gears. My husband change the filter, gasket and fluid. In drive there is...

Just a guess, but it sounds like an internal valving problem (pressures inside are being mis-directed likely by valves that are not closing all the way) This can cause damage to clutches as they are fighting against each other to move the vehicle. It should be checked by a reliable transmission shop immediately. (they have the proper test equipment to determine what needs to be done...(transmissions are not "user friendly" for repairs other than filter service and external adjustments)

1500 series truck uses the 4L60E transmission, and a common failure on that model is the reverse sun shell. The shell has a collar with splines that engage splines on the sun gear. The shell either strips the splines,or breaks the collar,.either way,the shell is inoperative and needs replacing.Aftermarket transmission parts businesses sell a heavy duty version of this reverse shell, called the beast. It is made of much thicker steel and won't strip or break.
