I have a 71 C10 with a posi rear end. When I turn

I have a 71 C10 with a posi rear end. When I turn and accelerate the rear end make a clunking/slipping noise, but straight take offs are fine? Is this common with posi rear ends are is the noise a problem? I put new carrier bearings and posi oil additive as well as new rear end oil. I got it the chunk from another vehcile and put it in my truck.
Thanks
Jason

Chunk---Center Section, 1960's term. Put in new Posi Discs/Clutches. Make sure you shim it properly, I like tight and the springs do weaken. So your call on stiffer or OEM

Make a series of tight turns in both directions if posi plates are stuck often that will free them. I have no idea what a chunk is so I'll refrain from commenting on that one.

Why do Both my back wheels turn in opposite directions

Hi Anthony. This is a reaction called "Torque" Commonly, most rear wheeled vehicles have what is called "Limited-Slip Differential" What happens is, as the vehicle makes a turn, the inside rear wheel rotates slightly slower than the rear wheel on the outside of the turn. This ensures even power distribution to the rear wheels from the transmission. If you have a "Positive Traction" (Posi) rear wheel drive, then when you accelerate, both wheels turn at the exact same rotational time. The consequence of this is, when you turn, you will hear a rear tire squeal on the pavement. There is also the "Semi-Posi" that acts like an Limited-Slip, until you apply power. Then the rear wheels turn at the same rotation, but only under power. To experience what it would be like if all wheels turned the same direction at the same time, find someone with a 4 wheel drive (4x4) with manual hubs, and on pavement put it in 4 low and try to turn. 2 of the tires will squeal on the pavement, and you will notice it will slow you down very quickly during a turn. I hope this gives you the info you wanted. ^^

When on soft dirt or gravel, engage the 4wd. From a stop position, accelerate quickly to spin the tires. Inspect your starting position for spin marks. There should be marks in the dirt or gravel on opposite sides from front to rear. The rear may have two marks depending on limited slip or posi rear end.

you can use the oil for the towing package in either rear end, but what they want to know is if the rear end is posi track. to find out jack up the back of the jeep put the transmission in neutral and turn one of the rear wheel if the wheel on the other side turns in the same direction that you are turning the wheel then you have posi track if the wheel on the other side turns backwards the you don't. but like i said you can use the towing oil in either rear end when in dought use the towing oil.

1993 k2500 with posi. Posi engaged on snow covered road. Now there is a clunking in the rear end. feels like the rear axle is fully locked up when i turn

The posi is lucky if it ever does anything
It won't lock, the clutches almost alway slip when they are suppost to work

Pull the cover and see if you have broken washers on the side spider gears, etc
On a 93 I would pull the carrier out and put in new clutches and inspect for your issues.

youd have to drop the differential covers in the junkyard til you found one with posi. posi was optional on the trucks.

Rear end noise on 2002 Dodge ram 1500

If you have a positraction differential, you need posi additive along with the new lube. After it's in, take it to a parking lot and make tight left turns then tight right turns to get the lube between the posi plates. That usually frees it up unless there is an actual mechanical problem in the diff.
good luck!

Want to change gears in rear end for posi traction in a 98 gmc25000 is this possible?

It is possible, you just have to know what gear ratio you have in your Sierra. I had issues with my son's rear differential and did the Salvage Yard and picked one up for $250.00 with less then 45,000 miles. Remember new cars end up at Salvage Yards also.

Here are the Pro code for the rear ends to your Sierra and you can match one up at a Salvage Yard.
GQ1 -- AXLE REAR, STD RATIO
GT4 -- AXLE REAR, 3.73 RATIO
GT5 -- AXLE REAR, 4.10 RATIO
GU4 -- AXLE REAR, 3.08 RATIO
GU5 -- AXLE REAR, 3.23 RATIO
GU6 -- AXLE REAR, 3.42 RATIO
G80 -- AXLE REAR, LIMITED SLIP (POSI TRACTION)

HC4 -- AXLE REAR, 4.56 RATIO

Open Your glove box and look inside it. Should be a list of codes on the bottom.
Example: GU6 G80 According to that, you'll have a 3.42 posi

Good luck and keep me posted and call around Salvage Yards, there prices will differ from one to the next salvage yard and don't ask them for a posi rear end. The cost will you more, just search all the SUV's and look at the pro codes in the glove box. Hunt, most awd system SUV will have the G80 rear end.

Good luck and keep me posted.

WHEN I ACCELERATE FROM A STOP FELLS LIKE REAR END VIBRATES AROUND 2000 RPM THEN GOES AWAY UNTIL I HIT SPEEDS 75MPH TO 80MPH THEN SOUNDS LIKE A HUMMING NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR. HAD TRANS. REBUILT 9000...

I have seen a posi rear that had regular gear lube put in instead of posi fluid. I had my transfer done on my 99 jeep and about three thousand miles latter I was getting a chatter, found out they check the rear while diagnosing the transfer case, and put reg. fluid in it. Sad thing is I was a repair shop but had an extended warranty on my vehicle so decided to farm it out so if there was a problem it was covered. Big mistake.

Check the differential.

Your explanation is stating two different rear end styles. Limited slip and posi-traction. But either way if you have a wheel that won't engage when one slips with limited slip or one that doesnt turn with posi then you either have a broken axle or an internal differential issue which can be confirmed by pulling the rear cover off the diff.

One rear wheel spins and the other does not

Unless you have a Posi-Trac Rear end which you don't Only 1 Wheel turns. The Posi-Trac rear end is a Factory Option. You have got the Standard Option Rear end.
