Question about 1999 Isuzu Rodeo

1 Answer

My 1999 Rodeo won't start right away. Sometimes, you turn it and nothing happens, put it in neutral (this is an automatic by the way) and it will start. Other times, it won't make a noise when you turn your key, put it in neutral, same thing, put it back to Park and it will turn over and start. Lastly, this might go on for several minutes going from not turning over, or barely turning over for a couple of seconds before dying, or until finally it finally catches and barely starts. I had the battery recharged and it worked fine for just over a week before it started doing this again. The shop told me to check to see if the headlights were bright when this is going on and they appear to be. Could it be the battery isn't holding a full charge and not giving enough voltage? Or could it be something else.

New Battery, same problem. When I turn the key, no response, slowly after a half-dozen times trying, it will slowly begin to turn over and finally eventually starting. It is like the alternator is slowly kicking in, not sure. Maybe there is a problem with the ground. I don't know why it will eventually start - to me, it should either work or not start up at all.

2 things, first have the battery checked/replaced. if all is well with battery. second, very unlikely, its the switch that makes sure you are in park or neutral before engine will get contact.

from this new information i would suggest checking all the large cables from battery to engine block and to starter. make sure they are clean and tight.

My 99 Rodeo will not start in park but does start in neutral, what is the problem?

it sounds like the cut out switch on the shifter is out of adjustment which explains why it will start in neutral only . it is designed as a safety measure to stop the car being started in any position other than neutral or park. if you have a look at how to remove the console or shrouding to the shifter its self you should be able to locate the switch as it will be on the shifter there close by and it will wave a electrical connector as well . look at how the switch works in the working neutral position then move the shifter to park and adjust so it makes the correct position and contact . after repair replace all covers and check for proper operation and lock out . hope you find this helpful

Ssangyong Kyron 2007 shuts down when driving

run fault codes and look for a problem with the TCM ( possible reading and engine over speed which shuts the engine down)and it should re-engage gears immediately upon reselection

95 eagle vision esi slips out of gear at stops

there is a limp mode but I doubt if that is the problem
It indicates that the torque converter clutch servo/solenoid is faulty
run the fault codes to confirm if that is it or a faulty TCM
check wiring around the transmission

Put a new engine in a 1998 isuzu rodeo now it won't start. I thought it was the neutral safety switch because the R was on the dash and it was in park

This could be the problem. If your dash indicator is showing reverse but the transmission is in park it could be the safety switch. I'm not talking about the safety switch in the transmission though. In automatics they put a second switch to kill the starter from engaging. You need to adjust the linkage. If your shifter isn't actually on the column but the indicators are there is a cable that attaches the floor shift to the column and that is adjustable. Put the Floor shifter in Park and turn the column section nearest the dash by hand until you find park. Then adjust the cable length as needed. If all you have is the column shift it is still a cable adjustment. Set the emergency brake, drop the shifter to low 1 and adjust the cable linkage by loosening it on the transmission and manually move it all the way to low 1 then tighten it down then move the shifter to park and repeat teh adjustment process to verify that it is properly aligned. Lock the linkage back down and see if the vehicle will start, if it doesn't move the shifter to neutral and try to start the vehicle if the vehicle starts then check the column shift safety switch at the park position to make sure it is still in place and working. Typically, if the vehicle won't start in Park or Neutral it is more likely to be the Transmission neutral safety switch.

I turn the key nothing happens? I have new battery, I put in a new starter, all the lights and bells work. The starter has been tested it'"s new. I changed ignition relayy switch still nothing It...

I have a 93 pathfinder SE 4X4 automatic transmission that had full power, new starter and battery. Sometimes it will start and sometimes not. By passed starter relay by adding push button start and it started 6-8 times then nothing. I finally figured out that it was the neutral safety or inhibitor switch on the 4 wheel drive shifter. Just an idea..good luck

2000 Rodeo has intermittenly starting problems

It sounds as if your neutral safety start switch may be failing. This switch only allows for the safe start of an engine when the automatic transmission is in either park or neutral. It seems when you move around the gear selector you get it back to a spot where the switch allows the engine to start. Next time this happens while in park, try wiggling around the gear selector or place your foot on the brake (so you don't roll away) and place the transmission in to neutral. If it fires up you know to either adjust or replace the switch for the park position.

I hope this might have helped,
Tom
