I have 103,000 miles on my 1999 Chevy Malibu. I have noticed some slipping. I had the transmission oil changed with a new filter and gasket. I didn't seem to solve the problem. Does the type of transmission oil have anything to do with it? Should the transmission be failing at this mileage?

Before you drain the fluid, make sure you have a suitable funnel(one of those long flexible tube types worked great for me) to get in past what is in the way. Be careful with the fill plug because you need to have your car level, jacking up the front end won't do it because then you have tilted the transmission and the fluid level is off. I used a lift to check after filling it and it took about another 1/8 quart, so if you fill 7 1/4 quarts you would have a healthy slight overfill and I wouldn't worry about checking it if you don't have a lift. The 13 quarts total is talking about the torque convertor being dry which as long as you don't start the car with no fluid in the there won't be a problem and 7 1/4 quarts would do it.

To much fluid in transmission? chevy avalanche

Usually after dropping the pan and changing the filter, four quarts is safe to start. After a long warm up, the level will have to be checked. May take from 1/2 to 2 more quarts.

Change the transmission fluid

to change the transmission fluid and filter. jackup front of car, loosen all pan bolts. then loosen back bolts and take out the bolts, just to lower the pan to drain the fluid. when mostly all fluid has drained out. remove the other bolts and drop pan. to remove filter there are 2 screws. be careful not to lose the magnet in pan. remove filter and pry out the seal, push a new filter seal fully into its bore, then install new filter.working around pan, tighten the bolts a little at a time untill final torque is reached. fluid and filter change about 7 quarts. the pan bolts are 108 in-lbs. good-day !

  • When you change a transmission filter the general rule is you loos roughly 1/4 - 1/3 of your total transmission fluid capacity.
  • I would buy 3 quarts and dump two in the transmission after the filter/gasket change. Put your foot on the brake and go through the gears to fill the pockets in the transmission up. Then put then check the fluid and add some more as necessary. Should be around 2 1/2 quarts total you will loose in the filter change.

  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

99 Chevy Malibu - auto trans - no dipstick

You have what is called a closed cased transmission. You have to crawl underneathe to get to the tranny and remove the upper bolt close to the side of the case (more towards the bottom of the transmission). When you fill it, you fill it till it starts to drip out of that hole.

Looking for a picture for you.

1999 chevy malibu runs good and sporadically dies when driving

When does it shut off? Need more information to help. I had a similar problem, but it would happen when it was hot outside and the fuel was less than 3/4 a tank. It ended up that someone had put moth balls in my fuel tank and it was gumming up the fuel pump.

1999 gmc suburban rpms go up but car does,nt go any faster

Have you checked the transmission fluid level?  Also, have you changed the transmission filter?  I would definately do these two before I would take it to a shop.  A typical transmission filter/gasket kit costs about $10-15 for that truck.  And the transmission fluid will run around $2-4 per quart.
Changing the filter is easy.  You will just take the transmission pan off and then pull the filter out, replace the filter, and then replace the pan gasket.  Then bolt it all back up and fill it with fluid!  It's that simple.
