Question about 2000 Volvo S80

1 Answer

Hi, Have an ATF leak coming out of the right axle where the half shaft enters a short intermediate adapter that connects the axle to the transmission. The transmission seal is dry. The leak is coming from this adapter piece which sort of reminds me of a harmonic balancer type thing. I cannot recall seeing anything like this on any other car before. Oil has to pass through it in order to leak. What is going on? Do I need to replace the (for lack of better words) Axle Adapter?

How do I remove outer half shaft seal on MF 2203 we think it's fitted with MF 165 axle

You have to remove the inner hub first. I suggest you buy the shaft. If you don't get it right, both sides leak. Were I live, that seal is half the cost of a new axle.

2003 gmc envoy 4x4 problems. 4200 vortec engine. my front diff doesnt seem to be

The Selectable Four Wheel Drive (S4WD) Front Axle consist of the following components:
• Differential Carrier Housing
• Differential Case Assembly
• Inner Axle Shaft
• Intermediate Shaft Bearing Assembly (located on the right side of the oil pan)
• Electric Motor Actuator
The front axle on Selectable Four Wheel Drive (S4WD) model vehicles uses a disconnect feature mounted on the right side of the oil pan in order to engage and disengage the front axle. When the driver engages the 4WD system, the Transfer Case Control Module sends a signal to the electric motor actuator to energize and extend the plunger inside. The extended plunger moves the clutch fork and clutch fork sleeve across from the clutch fork outer gear that is splined to the right side wheel drive shaft to the clutch fork inner gear that is splined to the inner axle shaft. The locking of the two gears allows the axle to operate in the same manner as a semi-floating rear axle. A propeller shaft connects the transfer case to the front axle. The differential carrier assembly uses a conventional ring and pinion gear set to transmit the driving force of the engine to the wheels. The open differential allows the wheels to turn at different rates of speed while the axle continues to transmit the driving force. This prevents tire scuffing when going around corners and premature wear on internal axle parts. The ring and pinion set and the differential are contained within the carrier. The axle identification number is located on top of the differential carrier assembly or on a label on the bottom of the right half of differential carrier assembly. The wheel drive shafts are completely flexible assemblies consisting of inner and outer constant velocity CV joints protected by thermoplastic boots and connected by a wheel drive shaft.

_i need to replace the intermediate shaft on the drivers side how do i get the old one out?

Girlfriend had a New Yorker with an intermediate shaft, but like most of them it drove the front passenger side wheel. When it went out instead of trying to find another one, which I found you can't, I just bought the right side front drive shaft for the version of the car which did not have the intermediate shaft. The big Chrysler one step down from the New Yorker. So she had a standard left side drive shaft and much longer drive shaft for the passenger side. As I recall there was a small bracket which held the intermediate shaft bearing which had to be removed and discarded. It worked just fine until the rear axle beam rotted through, you can't find those either, and she had to junk it.

1999 dodge cummins 2500 front axel seals

you need to pull off wheels, brakes, rotor /unit hub bearing, both axles and intermediate shaft, as well as the vac disconnec ton the front axle tube. if only the right side leaks then only then only pull the right axle and intermediate shaft and vac disco. it is a trick with a miller tool to replace the seal. the left side seal is inside the diff and the carrier has to come out to replace it. pete

Right-Front Intermediate Axle Shaft Bearing

I am assuming this is an all wheel drive. That being the case you probably have an axle CV joint going out. If you hear noise when making a sharp left or right turn and accelerating that would more than likely be the problem. And, yes this is a serviceable part. Easy to replace if you have the proper tools to accomplish the task. Good luck.

Removing the right intermediate axle shaft

i can only guess it is a 3.0l 4v well as far as the axle goes, the rh outer half shaft seperates at the splines on the intermediate shaft.
the intermediate shaft is the solid shaft from the trans to a bearing support bracket and ends after that. it is externally splined.
the rh axleshaft , inner cv joint, is internally splined.
to remove the rh axleshaft, remove the rh wheel and splash shield.
removed the lower balljoint pichbolt and seperate the lower balljoint front the steering knuckle. take the axle nut off and using a large brass drift or hardwood, drive the axle out of the bearing-hub assembly. DO NOT DAMAGE THE THREADS. also use some lubricant on the axle nut dissasembly. after the outer axle end is free, using the same brass drift or other, hit the inner cv joint and drive it off the intermediate shaft. inspect the splines closely because these fail and cause a no-drive condition.
then the mounint bolts for the support bearing and pull the intermedate shaft out, you will loose some fluid.

How to remove the left axle on 97 odyssey

yes, the left (driver) side pops off similar to the right side, however, it just pops off of the intermediate shaft instead of the transaxle. for some reason the first time i had tried it, it would not move. later when i tried it again it came off easily. go figure!
