Your converter is either clogged and/or the engine is running extremely rich and the excess gas vapors are igniting in the converter which could be the cause of the first problem.

Your cat is clogged! do not cut it off (i'm supposed to say this because that's illegal), because cutting it off you be a temporary fix, and the cops can cite you for it.Take it in and have it replaced pronto. (also Scott lawn fertilizer can help replace that bad patch haha). ;P

My check engine light flashes when driving or just sitting in park. it will go out when car deccelarates. when flashing the rpm's go up but loses power. Fuel pump/filter? 2007 jeep patriot

This is due to a misfiring engine cylinder, have a fault code test done to determine exactly which cylinder is dead. Do not drive the car this way, it will damage the Catalytic Converter ($500 part) and can cause a fire.

Catilitic converter red hot now car wont start after its cooled 1996 cavilier

You should never drive a car with a red hot catalytic converter. If the catalytic converter is heater up to the point where it is that hot, it could be a serious fire hazard. Cars which might have a leak in a fuel line could be at a major risk for a fire or explosion if gas fumes come into contact with a catalytic converter in that condition. -----------------------------------------------------------------

Catalytic converter in 1996 grand am gets hot. car won't run

is the converter turning red looking because these do get hot but should not be fire fire red. it may be stopped up. I one becomes stopped up it will keep it from starting and can cause more damaged if you do get the car to start. The exhaust will not have anywhere to travel but back up to the engine.

How do you know if your cat converter is going bad? Can you test for it?

There are two ways a converter can fail:
  • It can become clogged.
  • It can become poisoned.
There really is no "inspection port" for the consumer or mechanic to see an actual clog in a converter. Often, the only way to tell if a catalytic converter is malfunctioning (plugged) is to remove it and check the change in engine performance. When a clogged converter is suspected, some mechanics temporarily remove the O2 sensor from the exhaust pipe ahead of the catalytic converter and look for a change in performance.
A catalytic converter relies on receiving the proper mix of exhaust gases at the proper temperature. Any additives or malfunctions that cause the mixture or the temperature of the exhaust gases to change reduce the effectiveness and life of the catalytic converter. Leaded gasoline and the over-use of certain fuel additives can shorten the life of a catalytic converter.
A catalytic converter can also fail because of:
  • Bad exhaust valves on the engine
  • Fouled plugs causing unburned fuel to overheat the converter
Sometimes you can tell that a converter is clogged because you don't go any faster when you push the gas pedal. Also, there usually is a noticeable drop in gas mileage associated with a clogged catalytic converter. A partially clogged converter often acts like an engine governor, limiting the actual RPMs to a fast idle. A totally clogged converter causes the engine to quit after a few minutes because of all the increased exhaust back pressure.
The catalytic converter, like the rest of the emissions system, typically has a warranty length that exceeds the term of the warranty for the rest of a typical U.S. automobile.
Here is a safety reminder: Do not park your car over tall grass or piles of dry leaves. Your car's perfectly running catalytic converter gets very hot -- enough to start fires! You can keep it running well by keeping the ignition system in top shape, to prevent any unburnt fuel from entering the catalytic converter.

1986 ford econoline ignition failure

It could be your catalytic converter which is clogged, when the car is cold.. you are getting enough exhaust escaping allowing the car to run, but it will be very restrictive, once this is hot is so restricted that it will not allow the car to restart.
This can be a serious condition and if parked over dry grass or trash could actually start a fire. Take you vehicle to a respectable exhaust specialist.

The code P0420 is the catalytic converter, you need to get this checked, by an exhaust specialist or mechanic with the correct equipment/ testers ,if the cat gets badly blocked it can stifle the engine and gets VERY hot , so being a danger of fire. I have seen these glowing bright red.
Hope this helps

Overheating exhaut

wow, are you missing a heat shield under the car at that point, or is new exhaust routed any differently than the stock system? I know the Florida state police had trouble w/ Mustangs starting fires on the median while parked in the grass doing radar and investigating accidents years ago, maybe about the year of your car. They lost several cars. I believe it was the catalytic converter that was torching the grass. How about installing a heat shield in the area you had the overheating? And don't park in the grass. Do not know what else could cause it though. good luck and let me know how you make out. countrycurt0
