1996 GMC Suburban - Quit Running While Driving, Will Not Start

I have a 1996 GMC Suburban and was driving it today and it quit running while driving and I had to coast off the road. It will not re-start and acts like the fuel pump may have died on it. I know there is a Fuel Pump Relay under the hood as well as a Inginition Swith Relay of some type located soemwhere. Any hints or ideas to help get back on the road would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Fred

Switch the fuel pump relay with another on in the realy box. see if you hear the pump come on when you turn the key on (should run for 2 seconds) if not, have someone rap on the bottom center of fuel tank while you are trying to start the truck if it starts, the pump is bad and you will need to replace it. if you hear the pump run and is doesnt start, it may be a spark problem , verify if you have spark. this engine needs 58-62 PSI fuel pressure, if it has 55PSI, its not going to run.

Listen at the back by the fuel tank for a 1 to 2 second prime cycle whirr from the tank when turning the key to run position after it has been off for at least 10 seconds.
No noise means no running pump.
....and no noise means.....
Most likely it will need a new fuel pump....80%
Fuel pump relay 10%
Fuse or bad wiring 10%

The quick fix to get home is to crank the truck to create oil pressure to fire the pump......and while cranking WHACK the tank hard with a 2by4 or something like that....to jar the pump..... and it may start running long enough to get it somewhere to be repaired.
This works 60% of the time on a dead pump.

If you do hear a whirrr.....you most likely need a ignition module or crank or dist pickup.

I have a 1991 GMC suburban, it started fine and

You need to replace the fuel filter every 30000 miles. The gas stations tanks are full of dirt. Also check the flow of the catalitic converter.Put your hand at the tail pipe while someone is pushing the gas petal down. The farther they push the petal the more exhaust should be coming out.
I hope this helps you

Truck sometimes starts, sometimes quits after running

It sounds like you have a defective fuel pump or a bad fuel pressure regulator.
