Question about 1986 Buick Century
I just bought a brand new gm crate motor and its just about ready for start up can i jus start it up and let er go or do i have to prime it
Because you do not know how long the engine was sitting after being built.......a priming of the oil system never hurts but is only an option.Yes or no is OK.
You can remove the dist if you have one and spin the pump........or remove spark and fuel.......and plugs and crank until oil pressure shows.....oil filter filled etc.
DO NOT flood the engine before it's first start.
We DO NOT want to wash the oil off the cylinder walls.
As soon as you can ......after the engine is running...........antifreeze topped up and engine at proper temp.....get it out on the road and load the engine with VARYING degrees of throttle then let it coast down then load again.
This will seat the rings before the sharp honing is gone from the cylinder walls.
Acceleration and DE acceleration is very important at this time.
Don't go crazy on it just load it and unload it.
Seating the rings PROPERLY now .....will pay off...BIG TIME.

I would prime it. fill the oil filter up as much as you can with oil. now take the distributor out ( mark or remember where the rotor is pointing) now take a large screwdriver or something that you can turn the pump until it gets hard to turn, then keep turning it for another 20 seconds, then you should be primed. you can damage your new engine if it runs without oil for a several seconds. The easy way , but I dont like it, is disconnect the coil or whatever so it wont start and try cranking the motor until the oil light goes out, then rehook everything and crank it up.
