Depends on what's in the way. I've done it both ways. It's not fun though. At times it will seem almost impossible to remove. Don't give up when you start thinking that.

Four cylinder engine - loosen bottom pivot bolt on alternator, then loosen top bolt and pull the alternator away from the engine to tighten belt. When at proper tension, tighten top bolt to hold tension and tighten bottom pivot bolt.
Six cylinder engine - loosen the lock bolt at the bottom of the alternator, then use the adjustment bolt (perpendicular to the lock bolt) to tighten the belt tension. Once properly tensioned, tighten the lock bolt.
These cars dont have a dip stick on manual transmissions. there are two bolts on the transmission one on top and the other on the side. The top is to fill and the bottom is to drain. Hope this helps.

The alternator is located inside the engine comparment left side (if you are standing in-front of the car-facing the engine). It is very near to the exhaust manifold. And the alternator belt is facing the windsheild washer reservior.
loosen the mounting bolts on the alternator, remove the old belt, replace with the new belt, slightly tighten the top mounting bolt, pull the alternator up until the belt is tight or if there is an adjustment bolt, crank down until tight (shouldn't bow more than 1"), and tigten other hardware.
Loosen the upper bolt from the top and remove. From the bottom remove the adjuster bolt and remove. You'll have to remove the CV axle and remove the alternator from the bottom of the car. Not a very good design as you may already be aware of.
