Question about 1993 Saturn SL

1 Answer

Saturn 1993 SL: Car will not move when in gear. Added some extra transmission fluid and car still won't move but noticed the serpentine belt is just about falling off when checked engine. Would the serpentine belt effect the transmission and not cause the car to move?

The serpentine belt will not affect the trans operation, u are describing a defective transmission, the forward clutches have failed or there is a internal hydraulic pressure leak, in either case the trans will need to be pulled out and repaired/overhauled

20004 Saturn i am having shifting problems will not go into gear smoothly,if at all . 5th gear in nearly impossible to find with out grinding . Is it the shifter ,clutch or clutch pedal not engaging?

Possible causes are: The clutch is going out, the hydraulic clutch system is low on fluid, or the transmission input shaft is binding on the pilot bearing. 1. Is the pedal firm and does it feel like it used to? (low fluid). 2. Once in gear and moving push on clutch and notice when the transmission disengages. If it does not disengage until the pedal is almost at the top then the clutch is getting thin and will need replacing. 3. With vehicle on a smooth flat surface, depress clutch and try to shift into any and all gears. Notice if vehicle tries to lurch forward as shifter goes into gear. This may be a subtle lurch but should be noticeable. This checks for a binding pilot bushing. Let me know what you find. Thanks and please rate.

My 1996 saturn stars up but it wont take off once in gear

Well start by checking transmission fluid, condtion and fluid level, if empty, or burnt and black the transmission is bad, and sound like it is a transmission problem regardless if while in gear does not move.

What kind of transmission fluid do you put in a manual 1996 saturn sl model?

You put gear oil in a manual transmission, not automatic transmission fluid. Look in your owners manual for the proper weight, or ask the guys behind the counter at a parts store.

Can runs. can shift it into a gear. however applying gas does not move the car.

This sounds like a transmission problem. I would start by checking the transmission fluid. You must start the engine and put the car in Neutral before checking the transmission fluid. I would bet that it is low on transmission fluid.

Car dumped fluid on driveway and now won't go into gear or move

The fluid is most likely hydraulic fluid from the slave cylinder,I would like to be able to say that's the only problem but the problem you describe indicates that something is wrong in the clutch also. You say kinda like it's stuck in gear, can you describe this better for me?

Manual transmission

It sure sounds like a clutch problem, You describe needing more RPM's which indcates a slipping clutch. If the shifter goes into each gear but the car doesn't move your clutch is gone or the linkage is stuck or inoperative. hope this helps, Chuck

1997 sL1 Saturn manual transmission hard to change gears

The dipstick is behind the battery, below the master brake cylinder and is not the clutch reservoir. It has a red flip top handle instead of a ring like most dipsticks. It was hard for me to find due to engine grease. I had the same problem and was able to see that I was low on fluid (only a little) and adding fluid helped the problem.
