Have the system serviced a shop because you could have a leak in the system. If it just stopped all of a sudden then you probably have an electrical problem. Check all the fuses and relays, also check the pressure switches on the lines and make sure they are working properly. This particular car uses R134 freon. You can buy it at the local parts store and even walmart sells it.

SOURCE: My air conditioner is not working on my 2002 BMW X-5. The air is cool it just won't blow out.

If there is air moving through the vents most likely the final stage transistor(blower resistor) has failed. It controls blower speed from a signal from the ihka (a/c control panel). the final stage receives the signal from the ihka of the drivers preference blower speed. the final stage pwm (pulse width modulates) the blower motor. which means it turns it off and on very quickly to speed up or slow down the blower motor speed. It isn't the easiest part to replace. Usually at a dealership i would expect to pay somewhere around $600 (including diagnosis)but don't hold me to it. bmw dealerships stand behind their repairs and usually include a warranty with the part of 2 years unlimited mileage.

SOURCE: The a/c on my 2000 bmw 323i blows warm air when I

Sounds like your fan is not working. If it is electrical, may be bad relay, fuse or fan motor. If it is mechanical, most likely the clutch is bad.

My bmw 316 ti 2002 aircon not working well, the blower works but doesn't blow cool air,

i cud be wrong but there's a electric value and sounds like its opened and not closing its located just under the air intake manifold with some 1/4" pipes going into it . http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=AY72&mospid=47632&btnr=64_1169&hg=64&fg=18
parts no. 5 prob not the exact same as urs but similar but u can check this by taking it off then reconnecting the wire connector get a light and see if the valves are closing
what this part does is shuts off the hot water to the interrior radiator in the car so it cools down and ur cool air starts flowing and when u want hot air the valve opens and lets the rad heat up so u get hot air

How much coolant do I add to top up if warning light comes on

NEVER OPEN THE COOLANT RESERVOIR WHEN THE ENGINE IS HOT!!!
If the coolant level gets too low, the air gets inside the cooling system and there's no proper circulation. Here's how you can fix it yourself: turn the heater on maximum temperature (inside the car), then start adding BMW coolant (it has to be the BMW coolant) to the overflow tank -cooling reservoir. Some models have a bleeder on the upper radiator house, so you have to loose the bleeder. The fluid will push the air out- also there may be a little of coolant coming out, which is O.K..
Next, tighten the bleeder after the coolant reaches the maximum level, close the reservoir and start the engine and wait till it warms up to the normal operating temperature or in other words, when the cooling fan (the fan is just behind the radiator) turns on and off. One more thing, there should be hot air blowing out of the heater inside your car. If it blows cold air, there's still some air in the cooling system and you should see a mechanic. If you don't, you might over-heat the engine.
