Do you know anything about automotive electronics ? Electronic control modules .
Headlamp ON/OFF control is determined by the body control module (BCM) by a signal on the headlamp switch on input circuit when the headlamp switch is in the HEAD position. When the headlamp switch is in the AUTO position, the BCM determines headlamps ON/OFF by the voltage from the ambient light sensor.
If the headlight switch is left in the ON position, the inadvertent power control feature will turn OFF the headlights approximately 10 minutes after the ignition switch is turned to the OFF position. If the driver places the headlight switch in the ON position after the ignition switch has been turned OFF, or if the ignition switch is in the ACCY position, the headlights will remain ON until turned OFF or the battery runs dead.
The high beam indicator is illuminated when the instrument cluster receives a GMLAN serial data message from the BCM that the high beams are illuminated.
High Beams
The high beam headlamps receive voltage from the headlamp high relay located in the underhood fuse block. The BCM controls the relay on the headlamp high beam relay control circuit. High beam control is determined by a signal on the headlamp dimmer switch signal circuit from the multifunction switch. When the headlamp dimmer switch signal circuit is grounded, the BCM grounds the headlamp high beam relay control circuit, illuminating the high beam headlamps. The right and left high beam circuits are independent and are fused independently in the underhood fuse block.
Low Beams - Standard
The low beam headlamps receive voltage from the headlamp low beam relay located in the underhood fuse block. The BCM controls the relay on the headlamp low beam relay control circuit. Low beam control is determined by a signal on the headlamp dimmer switch signal circuit from the multifunction switch. When the headlamp dimmer switch signal circuit is open, the BCM grounds the headlamp low beam relay control circuit, illuminating the low beam headlamps. The right and left low beam circuits are independent are fused independently in the underhood fuse block.

Hooking up a factory scan tool an checking DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes would be the very first step in trouble shooting this problem .

98 cad deville headlights stay on headlight & twilight sentinel switch is off along with the ign. i'm stumped can you help. Ted


Did you check the high/ low beam headlamp relay ? Stuck contacts in side relay .Plus headlamp relay an DRL relay .All are located in the underhood relay center .
The headlamps are controlled by the body control module (PZM). The battery positive voltage (B+) is applied at all times through the HDLPS fuse at the switch side of the headlamp relay via CKT 340 (ORN).
Battery positive voltage (B+) is also applied at all times through the RADIO/PHONE fuse to the coil side of the high/low beam headlight relay via CKT 40 (ORN/BLK). Both relays are controlled by the PZM at separate output cavities.

When the headlamp switch is in the HEAD position, the instrument cluster headlamp switch input is grounded through CKT 10 (YEL) and the headlamp switch. The instrument cluster sends a request through the Class 2 serial data line to the BCM in order to active the low beam headlamps. The BCM supplies positive battery voltage (B +) to the coil side of the headlamp relay via CKT 352 (WHT). The coil receives ground through the headlamp switch via CKT 10 (YEL). The coil of the headlamp relay is then energized, closing the switch contacts. Battery positive voltage (B +) is then applied through the high/low beam headlamp relay via CKT 1346 (LT BLU) and the L HDLP LO fuse and R HDLP LO fuse via CKT 12 (TAN) to the left and the right low beam headlamps respectively.
This may sound pretty complex .

No low beam. Good high beam. No day lights. What's wrong?


No on the fuse . The LH HDLP and RH HDLP fuse in the fuse block - under hood, supply battery positive voltage to both low and high beam lamps at all times. For manual operation, when the headlamp switch is in the ON position, the headlamp switch supplies ground directly to the headlamps and to the body control module (BCM) on the headlamp low or high beam signal circuit, depending on the position of the headlamp dimmer switch. The BCM uses this signal to determine if the conditions are present to illuminate the daytime running lamps or park lamps.
The headlamps may be turned on 2 different ways. First, when the driver places the headlamp switch in the ON position, for manual operation. Second, with the headlamp switch placed in the OFF position activating automatic lamp control (ALC).For ALC operation, the BCM receives a signal from the ambient light sensor indicating a low or high ambient, outside, light level. Under low light conditions the BCM grounds the headlamp relay control circuit energizing the headlamp control relay. The now closed relay supplies ground through the headlamp switch to the headlamps and the BCM on the headlamp low or high beam signal circuit, depending on the position of the headlamp dimmer switch. When the BCM grounds the headlamp relay control circuit it also grounds the park lamp relay control circuit illuminating the park lamps. The headlamp relay is grounded at G203.
Daytime Running Lamps (DRL)
The low beam headlamps operate at reduced intensity when in daytime running lamps (DRL) mode. The ground circuit to the switch side of the DRL relay has a resistor in-line to reduce the intensity of the low beam headlamps for DRL operation. The body control module (BCM) receives a signal from the ambient light sensor indicating a low or high ambient, outside, light level. Under daylight conditions the BCM grounds the DRL relay control circuit energizing the DRL control relay. The now closed relay supplies ground directly to the low beam headlamps and to the BCM on the headlamp low beam signal circuit. The low beam headlamps now illuminate with reduced intensity. The DRL relay is grounded at G203. Any time the headlamps are illuminated the DRL will not illuminate. Manual park lamps do not effect DRL operation.

Why don't lights work?


Both the headlight switch and the BCM provide a ground, or control circuit, to the headlight relay coil circuit for manual or automatic headlamp operation. When you place the headlamp switch in the OFF position, and the ambient light sensor indicates low light conditions, the BCM energizes the headlamp relay for low beam operation. You may switch the headlights to high beam by pulling the dimmer switch handle toward you until the dimmer switch is activated. When the dimmer switch is placed in the HIGH position, the indicator lamp input to the BCM is pulled low. The BCM then sends a class 2 message to the instrument cluster in order to illuminate the high beam indicator lamp.

Pinpoint Test B: The Low Beams Are Inoperative
Normal Operation
The headlamp switch sends power through circuit 13 (RD/BK)/15 (RD/YE) to the daytime running lamps relay, then to BJB fuses 42 (10A) (RH headlamp) and 43 (10A) (LH headlamp) through circuit 13 (RD/BK). After passing through the fuses, voltage is then carried through circuits 161 (DG/OG) (RH headlamp) and 160 (DB/WH) (LH headlamp) to the low beam headlamps. Circuit 1205 (BK) is the ground circuit for the headlamps.
Possible Causes
  • Circuit 13 (RD/BK)/15 (RD/YE) open
  • Circuit 697 (BN) open
  • Circuit 196 (DB/OG) open

Why wont the headights or running lights work on my 2002 Buick LaSabre?


There are several reasons why your headlamps an running lights don't work , the headlamp switch is a good one ,plus relays an the DIM - dash integrated module an associated wiring ! Here is how the headlamps work , right out of Buick factory service info !
The dash integration module (DIM) provides battery positive voltage to the signal circuits of the headlamp switch. The signal circuits include the headlamp switch headlamps on signal, the flash to pass switch signal and the high beam input. With the headlamp switch in the ON position, a ground path is available for the headlamp switch headlamps on signal circuit of the DIM through the headlamp switch. The DIM provides ground to either the headlamps high beam relay control circuit or the headlamps low beam relay control circuit of the low beam circuit. The position of the headlamp dimmer switch determines which relay control circuit has ground. The DIM supplies battery positive voltage to the relay control circuits, if the headlamps are necessary. The fuse block - underhood supplies battery positive voltage to both relay switch circuits. When the low beam relay control circuit is energized, current flow is to both low beam fuses and to the low beam headlamps. The headlamps have ground at G103 and at G401. When the headlamp high beam relay control circuit is energized, current flow is to both high beam fuses and to the high beam headlamps. The high beam circuit is divided into a left and right side circuit. The current flow of the left high beam is from the fuse to the left high beam lamp. From the lamp, the current flows to the normally-closed contact of the DRL relay to G103. The current flow of the right high beam is from the fuse to the right high beam lamp. From the lamp, the current flow is to ground at G401. When the headlamp dimmer switch lever is pulled toward the driver, the flash-to-pass switch closes. This grounds the DIM flash to pass switch signal circuit. In response to this input, the DIM energizes the HDLP HI BM relay. Both high beams remain on until the driver releases the switch handle. If the low beam headlamps were on during a flash to pass operation, the low beams remain on. The headlights may be switched to high beam with the opposite movement of the headlamp dimmer switch lever.
By running lights , do you mean park lamps or day time running lamps ?
Park, Tail, License and Marker Lamps
The park lamps, including the license lamps, are turned on when the headlamp switch is placed in the PARK or ON position or anytime the headlights are requested. The fuse block - rear supplies battery positive voltage to the switch contacts of the Park LP relay. When the headlamp switch is in PARK or in ON, the park lamp switch on signal circuit of the DIM has a ground path. The DIM provides battery positive voltage to the control circuit of the Park LP relay. When the park lamps and/or the tail lamps are ON, the DIM energizes the park lamp relay control circuit. This closes the switch contacts. Current flows from the Park LP relay to the LH PARK LP and the RH PARK LP fuses. From the fuse, the current flows to the park lamps. The left park lamps are grounded at G103, G401 and G402. The right park lamps and the right tail lamps are grounded at G103 and G401. The DIMR fuse supplies battery positive voltage to the license lamps and to the DIM instrument panel lamp fuse supply voltage - 1 circuit, for interior lamps dimming. The license lamps are grounded at G401.
The best advice I can give is that you take this to a ASE certified professional repair facility unless your a qualified automotive electric repair person !

Have you checked fuses ? The Instrument panel fuse block , Fuse Block - I/P
LH of the I/P, near the door jamb switch - LF , fuse # 7 HDLPSW 10amp.
In the underhood fuse / relay box - Headlamp power relay , RT HDLP fuse 15amp LTHDLP fuse 15amp.
Battery positive voltage to the headlamp switch is supplied by the HDLP SW fuse in the IP fuse block. When the headlamp switch is in the HDLP position, the headlamp power relay coil is energized. A voltage signal is also sent to the body control module (BCM) signaling that the headlamp switch is activated. The headlamp power relay coil is grounded at G102. When the headlamp power relay is energized, the relay supplies battery voltage to the LT HDLP and RT HDLP fuses. Both low beam headlamps are grounded by the multifunction headlamp dimmer switch in the low beam position through the normally closed headlamp grounding relay in the body relay block to G200.
High Beams-Except ZR2 Battery positive voltage to the headlamp switch is supplied by the HDLP SW fuse in the IP fuse block. When the headlamp switch is in the HDLP position, the headlamp power relay coil is energized. A voltage signal is also sent to the body control module (BCM) signaling that the headlamp switch is activated. When the headlamp switch is in the AUTO or PARK position and the ambient light sensor detects darkness, the BCM produces a voltage signal that will also energize the headlamp power relay. The headlamp power relay coil is grounded at G102. When the headlamp power relay is energized, the relay supplies battery voltage to the LT HDLP and RT HDLP fuses. The RH high beam headlamp receives current directly from the RT HDLP fuse. When the headlamp switch is in the HDLP position, the BCM removes the ground path to the headlamp grounding and DRL relay coils. This allows current to flow to the LH high beam headlamp through the normally closed contacts of the DRL relay. Both high beam headlamps are grounded by the multifunction headlamp dimmer switch in the high beam position through the normally closed contacts in the headlamp grounding relay to G200. A ground signal is also sent to the BCM in order to confirm high beam operation.

Where is circuit breaker for headlamps on a 1989 caprice


The breaker for the headlights is inside the headlight switch.
You should have a fuse and relay for the horn.
Could be a problem with the wiring harness for the steering column.

The headlights of my 1998 caravan stay on all the time, not only disabled if you disconnect the battery, wath I can do?


Your headlamps are controlled by relays that can be fired by either the body control module (BCM) or the multifunction switch... the turn signal assembly. It might help to find out which of the circuits are currently stuck on, either high or low beam.

Note that each relay is hard-wired to the BCM and also wired to the multifunction switch (dimmer switch) for switching between beams and optical horn operation. Grounding of either of these circuits will energize the relay, keeping the headlamps lit.

Your relay box under the hood (PDC) is where the headlamp relays are located. Pop the cover off and pull each one of these relays out with the headlamps turned off and the battery connected. When you find the one that's energized, the lights will go out. Feel for the <click> as the relay is pulled and placed back into the PDC socket. If no click is felt, yet the headlamps turn on and off with relay removal/ replacement, you will simply have a stuck relay. Clicking means the relay has grounding on the control circuit, which takes us back inside the van.

I'd start with the multifunction switch. Give it several clicks in dimmer mode to see if it extinguishes the headlamps. If it does... obviously, this will be your problem.

If not, it would be a good time to disconnect the switch to view what the reaction will be. The column shroud covering the MFS uses a #2 Phillips to remove the three screws on the underside of the assembly... then it's pulled apart at the seams. It will fight you a little bit but that's normal.

If disconnecting the MFS extinguishes the headlamps, that's your solution. If not, we'll have to investigate headlamp switch operation and/ or BCM harness wiring. The last stop would be BCM replacement, as it defaults to headlamps on when it no longer sees an active headlamp signal (bad switch or open circuit) and grounds the relays.

Let's hope it's at the multifunction switch!
