Question about 1996 Toyota Celica

Over-revving in 5th at 75mph all of a sudden

I was coming out of a slip road from the services, and needed to get upto speed to join the traffic flow, short slip road so accelerated in 2nd upto around 55-60 then shifted upto 3rd and then 4th and finally 5th, bout 3miles later i went to overtake someone so i accelerated from 70 to75mph and noticed the engine was over revving as i hit 75 (still in 5th) so after i overtook i slowed down to 70 to prevent anymore engine over-revving til i got to where i was going.
Anyway I was driving around the town (with the normal urban speed limits 30mph/40mph) where I was and was being really careful not to rev the arse out of each gear and was driving like an old man, after bout 5ins of driving around town I accelerated reasonably gently from a junction and the engine started over-revving again like it had earlier and then all of a sudden it stopped and now its revving like normal like nothing happened, can anyone tell me whats happened please?

If the car rev'd up but did not speed up at the same time the clutch is starting to slip. Check the adjustment and recheck driving. When the clutch starts to wear this is how they act, only most people ignore whats happening and keep driving till adjustments won't fix it and the clutch has to be replaced. Have adjustment checked and keep an eye on it and hopefullty you won't need a clutch yet.

Have an fx45.Should the tach read 25-3000 ROMs when moving at 75mph? Auto tranny seems like it should be in higher gear.

there is not info to be able to give a definite answer
to work it out
you have top know the diff ratio, wheel tyre circumference to be able to work from rpms of the engine to road speed
However as a pointer, most cars will be around 3200 rpms at 60mph as this will be direct drive and od causes a drop in rpms
Being an automatic find yourself a good section of low traffic road and start from stop slowly increase the rpms and watch the rpms. keeping the accelerator steady you will see when the auto changes by a drop in rpms. slowly increase road sped until you see the next drop in rpms and so on. Over drive normally comes in around 55 mph or around 3000rpms
I would think that it is working because 3500rpms at 75mph is reasonable rpms to be expected. If it wasn't working I would expect the rpms to be around 3800 to 4000.at 75mph

If engine revs increase but road speed does not increase, your clutch is coming to the end of its life and needs to be replaced

I have a 91 toyota celica that will not go when put into gear.

Have you had problems with clutch slipping up to this point? Like engine revving up and no change in speed while driving. Like going into 4th or 5th gear, letting clutch out, giving gas, and feels like no response? Engine just revs up? That's a slipping clutch.
If that's your problem, you need a new clutch.

Just purchased my 2nd used Hyundai accent gs- 57,000 miles. I have been researching the cars problem of: 75 mph; in 5th gear, the rpm's are over 4000; making the engine noise almost unbearable! So what...

any "adjustments" you carry out to reduce engine speed at any given road speed will affect the speedo/odometer reading,BUT,the simplest/cheapest way of reducing revs is to fit bigger wheels/ tyres.say fit 15" instead of 13"with the same profile tyres.this will reduce your revs by about 500 @75mph.but the speedo will read 70mph.also acceleration times will be considerably reduced.and put an extra strain on the clutch/engine.
alternatively, swop the whole drivetrain to diesel,75mph=3500.

I would suspect the pressure plate and clutch need replacing. Your truck is 22 years old and if it has never had the clutch replaced you can almost bet it needs a new clutch and pressure plate. It slips in 4th & 5th gear due to the fact the the ratio is high and it takes more pressure to hold the clutch in place.

When driving in 5th gear should the RPMs run at 3000 RMPS. Mine is a 4 cly 5 speed

You don't provide much information to go on (type of vehicle, type of engine, 2wd or 4wd, etc.) RPM is always going to be based on the speed you're traveling with a standard transmission. My 4 cyl 5 speed Nissan pickup in 5th gear runs at 3000 RPM at about 75mph.
