Question about 1994 Oldsmobile 88

1 Answer

I have severe rattling sound coming from the area of my water pump on my 1993 Old Sillouette. When I put the vehicle in gear and drive it, the sound goes away but, when it idles the sound comes back. I have already bypassed the A/C condenser and replaced the alternator and the Idle tentioner. Still hasn't solved the problem. The water pump is NOT leaking and the power steering is in (I think) pretty good shape, though I do have to add fluid evey few months. Any suggestions ????

Dear JohnJohn2, I have removed the serpentine belt completely and spun the Pulley on both the water pump and the power steering. Both spin smoothly with NO noise but, when I jiggle the pulleys, both seem to be just a hair loose but stil don't make noise. Could I be looking in the wrong place for this noise ???

Because waterpump is not leaking doesnt mean its not noisey.could have bad bearing thats noisey. remove belt and spin by hand see if you haer any noise and see if loose.

Tapping sound when starting or shutting off the engine

Sounds of low oil pressure or oil need changed to thin. Either you need an oil pump or your engine is old and you need to rebuilt it. See the crank and rod bearings create pressure the pump pumps it up. Even if you install a new pump and crank bearing are low. Pressure will be low.

Jeep 360 rattle sound at idle in park

it could be a wrist pin, and im not sure if those amc's had hydraulic lifters but sometimes with old lifters when the oil pressure is lower at an idle the lifters arnt filling up all the way so they develope a little valve lash, and when the rpms are raised the oil pressure raises and fills the lifters. you could try chasing the noise down with an automotive stethoscope.

93 Diamante making clanking sounds under the hood. From fairly quiet to fairly loud. Sounds like it's coming from the belt area, a/c ciompressor area of the car.

This could be caused by different things. It sounds like it may be your timing belt though. If you remove your drive belts (alternator, power steering and air conditioner belts), and then restart the vehicle, if the noise stops, then spin the pulleys you just removed the belts from, to see which one is making the noise. If the noise does not stop, then it is most likely the timing belt tensioner making all that noise and you will need to have the timing belt and associated parts, idler pulley/s, tensioner, water pump and seals replaced. Hope this helps. Have a nice day :O)

My car is dropping water after I drive it. The next day I have to put a cup of water in the radiator. Is it the water pump?

could be just a loose clamp !!!! you need to inspect while cold. look for a flow line or wet area, dry off the best you can, compressed air works great. run motor to build coolant pressure and check again for leaks, all hoses, connections (clamp areas ) do a complete visual and find the leak before you spend 150 - 250.00 0n unnecessary parts and labor for that lexus

Rattling / grinding sound coming from engine area when vehicle is in gear and car break is applied, but when gear is set into neutral noise stops. Was told the problem was the aircondition compressor....

Just a couple ideas...
Your engine and transmission will shift slightly when in drive, and maybe that movement is allowing it to rub on something. Another issue may be that the noise is actually from the transmission.
Torn motor mounts will allow the drive train to shift or move farther than normal.

Sounds like you have a defectine cluthch componant. Best way to verify is get the rear axle off the ground . So as not to let the rear drive wheels make contact with the ground. Have an assistant start the truck and put it in gear. After making sure the vehicle is secure crawl under the vehicle and listen to comfirm that the noise is coming from the clutch area.

Rattling of catalytic converter heat shield

If it is the heat shield , any muffler shop can put a couple of welds on it. Could also be that the cat converter is destroyed inside with pieces of it ratling around. In that cast a new cat is the only answer.

Engine rattle

Does it only do it with the a/c on or does it do it with it off and in gear. If it does it with the air off and in gear the the problem is possibly in the tranny. If it only does it with the air on the possibly another pully in a bind causing the rattle possibly water pump.
