2000 kia sportage shift to drive or reverse dies out

2000 kia sportage 150k idle is ok shift to drive or reverse dies out. replace camshaft sensor and fuel pump, timing is ok. once it die out is hard to start. starts shift to drive dies again. do i need a new engine.

You might want to go to your local AutoZ to have them hook it up to a code reader and give you any trouble codes that may exist, but chances are you problem is going to lie with one of three things. The first thing I would check is the Mass Airflow Sensor(MAS). The MAS sensor is usually connected to the plastic breather tube that runs to the air filter. The next thing I would check would be your Idle-Air Control Valve. Not too sure where Kia put their IACV's at, but AZ's website should have vehicle specific repair info through Alldata for your Kia. The last thing that I would check if you still haven't fixed the problem would be your EGR valve. Other than that, the only other thing that I can think of would be your throttle positioning sensor, but this possibility is least likely. Hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Even though the fuel filter and pump are easy to replace, I would start with the IAC sensor first. It is easier to get to and is cheaper than the other two if you can find one at a wrecking yard (should be around $20). This sensor is the Idle Air Control sensor, and the computer decides how much throttle to give at idle from the readings of the sensor. If it is bad your car will idle poorly or not at all.

You can verify this two simple ways:

1. Disconnect the sensor completely and see if anything changes. If you get the same issue, then it's probably the sensor. If different then it could be fuel delivery.

2. With it all hooked up; try throttling the engine yourself at 1000-1200 rpm and see if it is smooth. If it is then it is probably the sensor. If not then could be the fuel delivery.

The sensor is under the silver and black, plastic KIA cover over the engine (4 small nuts to remove), and is center above the engine on the front side of the intake pipe.

If it seems to still be fuel delivery, the filter is (facing the engine from the front of the car) down to the left and toward the back attached to the fender well (Just to the right of and below the battery)

Sounds like you need a new shifter assembly, or the brake switch. Most likely will be the shifter though if you can move it out of park with the override.

Since fuel supply side have been changed, try looking into the ignition side. It will be much simpler if you scan your car for error codes. Less guesswork and lower repair cost. Without codes, next to check would be Crankshaft Position Sensor and Camshaft position Sensor. If both OK and all relays are OK, you should have spark.

Stalling while driving


Have you checked alternator output when the problem starts ? Could be a wiring problem including the alternator circuit.

Some makers used Vacuum releases for their emergency brakes which had a Vacuum switch connected to the shift assembly. This would account for a stumble if Vacuum vented out through this switch.

More common for shifting stumble to occur from Park to Drive, engaging a load on the engine, not to stumble to a freewheeling Park position. Sounds like idle speed control is sluggish to stabilize the motor.

You also have idle speed control problem with A/C, kind of shows that A/C was what kept the engine running because when you turned the A/C off, the car died.

I am going to give you some Websites for wiring diagrams. Alldatadiy.com amd Autozone.com with free wiring info upon registering your vehicle.

It seems that the base Idle speed control is not working and the A/C idle speed control is.

Also check for Vacuum leaks on the intake manifold by spraying water from a pumpbottle on the seams of the gaskets.

Check ignition Relay or ignition switch for random cutouts. The fusebox layout is on the Autozone site.
