Unfortuenetly yes. i have had the same problem but with an older vehicle. there was a lip between the tank and a bracket with builds up dirt and rusted the lip. however, being poor and not wanting to replace it there is a quick and SUPER cheap way to make it last for 5 or more year. If its just pinholl rust spot, you can clean up the metal and apply a compound call ed Seal-All. cover an extra inch around the rusted area. this stuff wil start to dry almost immediately. when its still a bit tacky, put a pice of cloth (fairly thin) either flannel or cotton over top and make sure its stick. then one dry, put another layer of seal all over top of it, making sure to rub it into the cloth and make sure that you cover an extra inch past the cloth area. this is what i did for my tank and its still hasn't leaked a drop in over 2.5 yrs. my friend did his and his is running on 6.5 years

hope this helps.. good luck

Fuel guage doesent alway's work

I would check the wiring to the gauge, all the way back to the sender. If the wiring is ok, then you probably need a new sending unit. The dealer or any auto repair shop should be able to do this for you.

To do it yourself, you will need to get a new fuel quantity sending unit for your vehicle, then empty & drop the gas tank, remove the old unit (small (~2-3") circle on top of gas tank,) and bolt the new unit in. I would shine a light down into the tank (NOT A LIGHTER!) to see if there is much sediment or rust down in it.

How do you replace a sending unit on a 85 Delta 88???..asap!!

If you are reffering to the fuel tank sending unit, the fuel tank will have to be removed for access. Once removed, you can remove the sending unit by removing the lock ring securing it to the tank. Depending on rust/corrossion, the lock ring may require some patience to remove. Once the ring is removed the unit pull right out of the tank

When my fuel gauge light indicates that I need to refuel i fill up on only 6 gallons why not 15?

it sounds like the float on the sending unit is not coming all the way up. or sending the wrong information to the fuel gauge on the dashboard. you may need to replace the sending unit

Fuel sending unit not receving fuel02 bmw 325ci

Your fuel pickup strainer in the tank is likely clogged with rust or debris. You'll need to drop the tank, remove the sending unit, replace the pickup strainer, and replace all gasoline in your tank.

Fuel level sending unit volts to high

If your fuel gauge always reads high, your fuel level sending unit sounds like it could be faulty. Could be bent or rusted etc. Sending unit wired up wring or faulty wiring system short/ground.

Gas guage stop working where is the fuse for it?

These trackers are notorious for the wiring to the sending unit on the top of the fuel tank rotting. My bet is this is your problem and not a fuse. If you do drop your tank and your luck is anything like mine :( you will see there is allot more in need of replacing. I replaced my tank and sending unit due to all the rust. Somewhat costly but in the long run it was worth it. you may be able to just replace the sending unit by removing the screws on the top of the tank and dropping in a new one but mine was so far gone I could not get the screws out. If your wires to your sending unit are rotted I would bet your wires to the fuel pump are not in very god shape either.

Gas gauge was working went to put gas in started up after we filled up the tank gauge went up then droped to empty.

Unfortunately......you have a gas sending unit that has failed....and yes it is located in the fuel tank...these GMs have had a very notorious tsb for the fuel tank pump and unit assembly failing due to design.....theres nothing you can do to repair this ....but you can replace this unit.....it's kind of a bear with a full tank of gas if you're gonna be doing this yourself....on the ground...this fuel tank pump unit is found quicker and more reliably at the dealership. ...HOPE I HELPED!!!!!

Fuel Gage reading E after I Fill up.

The fuel level sending unit is bad. Part is $90 from dealer. You can replace it yourself and save $500 from stealership. Drop gas tank and remove fuel pump. Sending unit is attached to fuel pump.

Fuel gage does not work

I just fixed that problem in my 87 Toyota pick-up. My fuel gauge showed FULL all the time. The sending unit in your fuel tank has probably croaked. I had to drain the fuel tank, remove it, and try to remove the screws that hold the sending unit in. The screw heads ALL snapped off due to them being 21 years old. Ended up having to buy a new fuel tank, as we couldn't get the broken ones out of the tank. Found an aftermarket new tank for about $275 at Advance Auto. Sending unit is only avaliable from Toyota for about $125.
