Change brake pads

For starters the front and rear us disk pads and it is not hard to do. On the front jack up the front and us jack stand for safety. After you take of the wheel remove the two bolts at the back of the brake caliper remove the caliper and then the old pads us a C- clamp with one of the old pads installed in the caliper then just us the c-clamp to push the cylinder all the way in until it will go no further install new pads put back on. But before you do the next side hit the brake to push the cylinder back out. Go to other side do the same thing. On a side not you only need to replace the rear brakes every other time you do the front. The front wear twice as fast as they do most of the stopping.

What tools are needed to change the brakes

if the front are rotors there are two bolts that need to be taken off first.
remove the caliper, then remove the two caliper bracket bolts and remove the rotor
replace the rotor and reinstall the caliper bracket.
pull the caliper sliders and lube them with brake grease.
reinstall caliper sliders and install new pads and caliper
refasten caliper to bracket and your done

if your doing rear disc brakes same as front
if brakes are drum type you will need rear drum brake tools to release the springs and to refasten
the new brake shoes

Brake light just came on in 2002 buick century. Brakes work..could it just need brake fluid?

it could, that should be the first thing you check. If its low, the brakes may need service. as the brakes wear it takes up fluid, and the pads may be worn to the limits.

How to change brake pads on a buick century?

Front brake pads are usually easy to do. Take only one side apart at a time. You will need a big C clamp along with other basic hand tools. After jacking the car up and using the proper safety stands remove the wheels. If you turn the steering wheel so you can get to the back of the brake calipers easier.  Now remove the two bolts that hold the calipers to the back of the wheel spindle and carefully take the calipers off. Remove the old pads, pay attention to what pad went where. Take the C clamp of slowly squeeze the piston the caliper in. Remove and replace the rotor at this time. Put the new pads in the calipers and replace the caliper and wheel. Make sure all bolts are tighten! Before trying to drive vehicle make sure you press the brake pedal many times. I hope this helps.

Inner brake calipers aren't contacting the rotor at all -- car is '99 Buick Century. Can they be made to work or do we just replace the whole caliper?

You may have bad rotors that are not up to par as even if the rotors are off by .05mm, it will allow the rotor to slip between the pads.

You should have your rotors inspected... and if that's not the cause, then change your calipers

I have a 1996 buick century with little brake pedal resistance

Okay....air is always the likely suspect....contamination of the hydraulic system too. Quick question, was it like this before the maintenance was done?

The other thing it could be also is the power brake booster check valve.

Let me know if it was like this before all the work.

Plus, if the parts were remanufactured, they could be faulty parts.

But let me know if it was like this before the work was done.
