It sounds like the alternator belt or the alternator is going bad. The squealing sound was probably the alternator belt. the alternator belt might need to get tightened or replaced or you may need a new alternator. The alternator keeps the battery charged. When the alternator goes bad the battery can not be recharged. You also should keep the power steering fluid up to par or the power steering will go bad on you.

If you still have a belt on power steering pump then it may have ran dry. Check fluid in power steering pump. If no belt to pump then replace lost one.

Does my 1999 saturn sl have power steering? It is very hard to turn the steering wheel. The dealer I bought it from (used) said that it doesn't even have power steering when I took it back to get looked...

The simplest way to check is to open the bonnet/(hood), and look for a pump driven by a drive belt. Cars with PS have a pump and small oil reservoir, with 2 hydraulic hoses going down to the steering rack.

Even without PS, you can improve things by keeping the front tyres on their upper pressure limit.
If there are other models in the range with it, it may be possible to fit it from a scrapped vehicle.

Pouring money into my '02 S60 AWD is making me poor!

The fun has only begun my freind. My 2002 Volvo S60 80,000 miles has cost me a over $2500 in repairs over the past year and right now it is stuck in park in my driveway after just getting it back from the dealership yesterday for the same problem. Sell you Volvo before it drains your bank account and patience.

Idling clatter on vw lupo

Hi

If this is the 3 cylinder Lupo then it could very well be the timing chain getting noisy.

Its around about a 3 to 4 hour job if I remember rightly, so at a VW main dealer labour costs would be over £200 ($400) plus around about £120 ($240) or so for the parts (chain and tensioner).

These are English prices though, so although I've put dollars in brackets, prices may still differ.

Just as a matter of interest, the main cause of chain stretch is lack of servicing, oil changes to be exact. If the service schedule is kept up then a timing chain will last several hundred thousand miles.

Very best regards

Geordie
