Question about 1998 Chevrolet Camaro

2 Answers

5 to 10 minutes after the sensor triggers my headlights on, my headlights go out and my gauges on my dash begin to jump up every couple seconds. There is a clicking sound when it happens and my lights dim (radio display, dash lighting and ceiling lights). The battery gauge dips down as the other gauges tick up. I never have any problems driving when the headlights are not on, what could the problem be and how is it fixed?

Check your battery connections and do a voltage test to battery with engine running lights off, then check with lights on. You need a minimum of 12.5 volts but should have 13-14 volts even with lights.

Take off the negative battery cable for 10 minutes. While waiting for that make sure you have all the ground straps connected that go to the battery cable end and to the engine.

take a look at the dash ground wire located next to the right of ebrake release handle. if the bole holding the ground wire is loose, which was quite common it will cause all kinds of feed back problems, like described in the comments section to your question.

Gas gauge jumping around

Gas gauge jumping around usually implies fuel level sensor in tank is going bad...Usually if the gauge in dash is going bad will read empty or at various positions depending on fuel level in tank..Electrical short problem in gauge usually affects other gauges in cluster

On a 2008 f550 after driving 10 to 15 km the dash warning lights come on the gauges jump around and there is no throttle response. After a minute or two it clears up and runs fine.

Check the alternator out put,if possible, check it when this occurs, out put at the battery when it is running, should be 13.65,to 14.25 volts.

Key off and gauges move

it's normal if it's what I think, fuel gauge goes to half on the right side and the farthest gauge to the left goes to half, if it's the case it's the security system that does that after about 10 or 15 minutes they both go back to zero, but as soon as you unlock the door and open it they go back to half until you start it....

High idle on my 1999 Saturn SL1. The mechanical screw on the idle cam is at its minimum. The car idles at 13-1500 rpms .

Clean the Idle Air Control Valve. It's on the throttle body below the Throttle Position Sensor. Worked for me! Good luck.

There is a sensor device, on the right side of the engine block near the front, for the oil pressure that has two parts to it. It is used to control the oil pressure guage on the dash as well as having a switch which has wiring going to the Electronic Control Module, and this ECM input has a software time-out safety feature. After the engine is started, if the indicated oil pressure goes too low or is lost, the voltage to the fuel pump is shut off. This is desired in the case of a crash. This event will cause the engine to quit. On my manual transmission vehicle the ECM will reset if the ignition is turned off for a couple of seconds. It sounds like this oil pressure (aka sending unit) sensor is not working properly, causing the fuel pump power to be removed.....(probably intermittently). About $20 and a few minutes to change if you can get your hands down in there.
