Rough idle after intake gasket changed

I changed my intake manifold gasket in my 06 Malibu which found out is a common problem in these vehicles, followed everything correctly but it seems to be having a small rough idle, but still has great power and as far as i know, no power loss.

Check for vacuum leaks. at idle spray carb cleaner around intake mating surface if idle smooths out you have vacuum leak.

Check all the old hoses or vacuum lines leading to the manifold...i found a small crack in one of my lines that was causing me a rough idle..of course it was way in the back were i could hardly see it...use an inspection mirror and take your time. also a plugged cooling sensor lie leading to the throttle body could possibly cause this problem too..it senses the temperature and regulates the idle circuitry.

The website has software that looks for obscene words.
I would think a compression test would show if the cylinder is having mechanical problems. And yes the intake or head gasket could be leaking again, especially if the intake or head were warped or cracked.
Have you checked fuel pressure ?
Does the spark plug for cylinder 5 show signs of coolant leaking into the cylinder ?

Rough idle

Have you tried changing the distributor cap and rotor? These tend to get moisture build-up and cause a slight cross-fire, usually most noticeable at idle. They are also very common for intake manifold gasket leaks, but they usually start out as a coolant or oil leak at the corners of the manifold.

Replaced IAC valve and erratic reving continues

Sounds like the intake manifold gasket. Easy test. Take engine cleaner, or brake cleaner and with truck running, spray directly onto the INTAKE manifold gasket where it bolts onto the engine. If you hear ANY difference in the idle, up or down, gasket is shot. Very common. If idle doesn't change, spray all the vacuum hoses you can, listening for any change in idle. Let me know how you make out, if it's not that, I can suggest more things, but if I were a betting man, I'd bet that the gasket is the problem.Cheers from Nova Scotia

I have a 2004 freestar with the 4.2L engine and last week got the engine light with the p0171 and p0174 trouble codes. The idle was rough and yesterday, it got so bad the engine will not idle at all. Any...

I just had the same thing. Engine light came on. Rough idle. Codes P0171, P0174, P2195, P2197. Within a week the idle got so bad it would die at stop lights. Seemed like a vacuum leak affecting the idle. Found it today. The elbow where the PCV tube enters the vacuum port on the upper intake was degraded, collapsed and had a whole in it. Wondered why it degraded. I disconnected the tube from the PCV valve and found it quite oily. I think the oil sat in the elbow at the intake because it is flat on top of the engine and could pool there, causing the rubber to degrad. Found a preformed piece of coolant hose at O'Reilly that was the right diameter and cut it to length. Put it on, runs like a charm. I ordered a new PCV valve because I think too much oil was coming through it and caused the hose failure._409.jpg_410.jpg

My 03 Lincoln LS started idling rough only in the mornings when first started. Rest of the day it starts and runs smooth.

Sounds like it might be leaking intake manifold gaskets. They leak when cold but as the engine warms up they swell and seal up. This is common with rubber intake manifold gaskets.

Check vacuum leaks , by spraying carburator cleaner around intake manifold gasket and vacuum hoses connections . See if engine picks up the idle speed while you doing it , and if it does , locate leak and fix it. Most common , intake manifold gasket brakes.

Coolant is leaking around intake manifold and temp gauge is not working on my 2000 chevy malibu 3.4 litre

the manifold gasket must be shot on the manifold. usually when the gasket goes bad it puts oil into the coolant, as far as the guage not working. it must be the thermostat is bad, it probably went bad because of the manifold gasket. I have a 3.1 and the gasket went bad, so I changed it and the thermostat at the time I had it torn down. check to see if the coolant has oil in it. the best thing to do is go to any auto parts store and buy a haynes manual for your specific vehicle, this is based on a complete teardown of vehicle, the book will describe the procedure to change manifold gasket. but if you change the gasket do not forget to replace thermostat and coolant when done. best of luck Toolman,
