Question about 1992 GMC Jimmy

Open Question

My speedometer is didgital and does not work.I need to know where it hooks up to find out if it has came unpluged or has shorted out.also if this is not my problem what else could it be?I need to explain what else it has done.Sometimes the speedometer will light up but will jump from different mph such as 24 57 36 16 47 etc. This is why I think it may have a short or something of that nature. This is a 1992 gmc jimmy 4.3 4x4 automatic trans.vin#1GKDT13W2N2525432.

SOURCE: Transmission Identification

If it's a 1500 then yes the 4l60E tranny is for you. If it's a 2500-3500 you'll need a 4l80E. The 80's are only used in trucks with a gvw or 7200 and greater.

It sounds like the power supply is dead for the transmission. Check the transmission fuse for power.

The o2 sensor will not cause a short. it works or don't work, unplug it and it will still have a short, some thing is still wrong and I think they don't know how to fix it.

It may be a faulty speedometer with a short inside, or a short on speedometer wirings or connector.

Whenever car vibration cause the wiring to short, there you lose speedometer and trans functionality.

You need to access the speedometer connector and wirings to
instrument panel to fix this.

Speedometer

Like with many newer cars, there is a speed sensor and wire for the speedometer, not a cable. I would say based on the information provided that when they replaced the transmission everything was not hooked back up properly. For intermitent electrical problems like your guage cluster/speedometer sometimes going blank, a short or bad connection is almost a certainty. Which could explain the overheating as well, the fan is electric and may not be working all the time. To switch the transmission, they probably lowered the engine and transmission out of it, put the engine on the new transmission and then reinstalled the assembly. In the process they may have missed some wire hook ups, or pinched a set of wires in the loom. There are a lot of wires running through the engie compartment and it can be easy to overlook or miss things.

Open front Trunk to access speedometer, remove cardboard cover and unplug electrical connections to speedometer one at a time and mark them so you can hook them back up in the same places, then un-screw the speedometer cable and remove the two nuts that hold speedometer to dashboard.
