Question about 2008 Toyota RAV4

3 Answers

I have a 2008 Toyota Rav 4 with 27,000 miles on it. I went to start my car at the store and it wouldn't start. AAA jump-started it; I drove it for 30 minutes and parked it in the driveway, turned it off, and tried to start it again and it wouldn't start. The lights in the car come on, but no clicking noise is heard. Also, on the way home from the store after it was jump-started by AAA, I was stopped for about 5 minutes and had to back up the vehicle. When I did this, I lost power steering or something because the steering wheel was not turning the car. I put it back into drive from reverse and went forward again, and then put it back into reverse and it worked this time.

Battery and check altenator for charging you should be within dealer warranty. advance and autozone auto parts will check for free and replace battery if required when you buy their battery of course. because the dealers pro rated battery may cost you more under warranty than for you to just buy one from some one else. if your charging system is defective then the dealer should handle the whole job so it can be warranted.

You most likely have a bad battery since the car starts with a jump. As for the steering problem you have electronic power steering. Most newer cars have this nowadays. Battery problems can cause this problem also.

SOURCE: car won't go in reverse

If the vehcile is V6,then the trans model is the A540E,and if it is the 4 cylinder engine, the trans model is an A140E.Both are 4 speed overdrive transmissions, and sorry to report that on just abot every automatic trans on the road, reverse gear failure is almost always a mechanical problem inside the transmission because there are no shift solenoids involved with reverse as with forward gears. And you did say the forward gears were fine.Good luck.

There is a pin in the transmission that has sheared off or a band has come loose. Bottom line you need to have the transmission serviced and repaired.

Most likely the battery. Most auto parts stores will check it for free with the hopes that you will buy your replacement from them.

My 2008 Camry was running fine, no warning lights on. Came out of the grocery store and it would not start, all the lights game on but it acted is if the battery was low. Got a jump start, drove two blocks...

It may be that the battery is bad where it won't take a charge from the alternator so it should be checked for that using test equipment, most autoparts stores like Autozone, Kragen, Advance Auto provide this service at no charge, since it's an 08 there is a chance that it may still be covered under the toyota factory which is 3yrs/36,000 miles for electrical parts.

Did AAA clean the battery cable connections when they installed your battery? Did you check the fuse for the insrument panel?

It could be just bad timing or a coincidense but I am more likely to think things are connected. If your gauges worked after jump starting your car, but not after AAA changed the battery, something changed or was left disconnected.
