Three weeks,4 alternators later, and $715.00 Ford finally was able to locate the source of the problem, (battery light kept coming on). They replaced the AB Cable Assy. They did not charge me, good thing because i would have gone ballistic seeing that i probably didn't even need an alterntor to begin with. I just hope their hours of labor and diagnosis was my retribution. Apparently it was a fluke incident that even Ford - Detroit had a challenge diagnosing; so much for accurate diagnostic equipment. Thanks for your help!

Three weeks, 4 alternators and $715 later, Ford thinks they have finally rectified the problem. They replaced a AB Cable Assy. They didn't charge me, good thing, because i would have gone ballistic seeing that bottom line is I probably didn't even need to replace the alternator at all!. They claim it was a fluke incident that even Ford detroit was baffled about; so much for accurate diagnostic equipment. I just hope the hours of labor and diagnosis and cost at their end is retribution for my pain and suffering and unnecessary expenses. Thanks for your help!

If your alternator replacement is brand new, it must work. Be sure that B+ (12v) at the battery gets connected to the alternator B+ terminal. Then, run the engine. See if there is a voltage generated by your alternator, from the wire before going to the regulator terminal. The voltage should be more than 12V. Check the regulator if this is working right. The regulator supplies all the electrical requirements of the car. If this is defective, your battery light comes on, so, check this up well.

Find a new mechanic! The heavy wire going from the alternator to the starter solenoid terminal where the battery cable is connected has a fuse link that will burn out if the alternator had a shorted diode. This wire will check very nearly zero ohms if it is intact and infinity if the link is open. There is an external voltage regulator associated with this alternator--has anyone bothered to check this out? If the battery is charged, why are they replacing alternators? A working charging system will show 13.5 to 14.5 volts across the battery terminals with the engine running. If it shows 12.6 volts, measure at the heavy connection at the alternator--it should be showing over 16 volts if the fuse link is open. If it shows much lower (under 12 volts), replace the voltage regulator.

That's why i do most of my repairs myself !
I would hav e looked for another mechanic after the second ,and especially the third altenator!!!
I don't know if i am more ashamed, embarassed,or just plain angry!
Sounds like this person needed help, and someone either didn't know,or took advantage!
the people who built the car had a hard time finding it ?(WOW!)
you need a working knowldge of the car(they should have had that)
going ballistic ?, i think you were very patient
I am glad you finally got it fixed

I have a 2001 ford mustang and when i get to 5th gear recently it starts missing and i have to take it back to 4th

missing in 5th gear may be a low fuel pressure problem and it could be a problem with the cat converter. Run fault codes to find any faulty sensors.

New Battery and alternator. The Battery light comes on and flickers when car is running.

It`s not uncommon to have a faulty unit, try voltage test on battery with engine running and all the electric`s you can switch on it should be putting out 13-15 volts at the battery also check belt tension...

My Chevy blazer wouldn't start mad a clicking

this is one of two problems (maybe both) ...
1. The battery has been fully discharged before, preventing it from being able to hold a charge properly. This can be tested at a Sears Automotive Center. If the battery is no good, get a replacement and you should be fine (at least for a while). If you are going to go to Sears, have them run a full electrical diagnostic -- if there is something draining your battery while the car is not in use changing the battery will only hide the problem for a few months until the new battery fully discharges, and the same issue with resurface.
2. Your alternator is not charging the battery. It might be pumping out electricity to the wiring that it is connected to, but the charge may not be getting all the way to the battery. Sears can also check this with their diagnostic tools, and should be able to locate and repair the problem for you. Unfortunately, without a VERY expensive diagnostic machine, it is very hard to tell exactly where the problem is occurring .. so taking it in to a shop is probably your best bet.

87 f250 drained brand new battery

I would first have the alternator checked by an auto electrician to ensure it is working correctly and is providing the correct volume of current. It may be faulty and when driving you will be drawing battery power instead of power from the alternator to run the electrics. This will drain the battery.

Alternators do not last forever and if you are still running the original unit it is likely to be on it's last legs and you will need a replacement unit.

My battery light won't go off even though i've had the alternator tested and installed brand new battery

well; on your car, the alternator has an internal regulator. have you checked any wires or harnesses that ran off the battery? And see if you may have a cut place on your cables, or if one has come loose from the ground.

Battery will not stay charged

Check the battery strength and then double check your alternator to make sure it's charging.. I installed 3 alternators, new off the shelf, on one vehicle, and all three were duds (4th one worked fine). If the battery does not need replacing, and the alternator is charging, double check and make sure no components are left on such as a light in the glove box.

If you check the connection of the battery .
if you hear a cliking noise. and lights inside weak.
Is mean the battery is descharged or not good.
Try giving jumpstart cables. or with other battery.
Really I guess is a battery problem.
If the vehicle start. check if the Alternator is Charging.

I hope this could be a good point to start your diagnostic.

I hope work for you.
